Curious observation: SST temps in the GOM in the past

#1 Postby drezee » Sat May 19, 2007 3:17 pm

NHC hurricane Archive:

After completing research on past hurricanes in the GOM, I found an interesting occurrence . How many times did they mention greater than 30C water in the GOM. Not once that I can find! Highest mention was 30C. We have in the recent past grown accustom to seeing water temps at 31 or 32C in the GOM in August. I can not say that it didn't happen before 1980, but it is hard to find a reference to it.

This like one of those reminders that we may be living in historic times...

One problem may be the few NOAA data bouys in operation prior to 1980 and their reliability issues early on.

However in the water temp historical data for bouy 42002 http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_histor ... tion=42002
I was able to find a 'spike' of 31.2 C on 77 07 25 21 (yr mo day hr) and another 32.3 C on 77 07 31 21 Also 32.6 on 79 08 12 20, etc

But I see what you mean, not near as many as after 1980 and nothing like 2005 when the periods of +30 C water lasted much longer and peaked a degree or more higher.
