I know what time it is...but

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Berwick Bay

Well it came off the African Coast, and of course it didn't hold together in "one piece" this early in the season. But, it has deposited storms into the ITCZ and the zone off Africa is now very active (especially for May).

Believe it or not, in our horrific season of 2005 (IIRC) we didn't have a significant Cape Verde-type system make landfall in the US. IIRC the last significant Cape Verde type cyclone to make landfall in the US was Ivan. I know it's May and some of us are grasping at straws here, but does all this mean that we MAY have a significant Cape Verde season this year?

It means this year will see some fairly intense waves come out of Africa. What factors influence African ICTZ activity?

The thing I remember the most about last year was that we had a number of impressive (if not intense) waves come off africa to only wind up fizzling out.

Too close to Equator

#10 Postby jimvb » Thu May 24, 2007 3:44 pm

This bunch of storms is too close to the equator. You can't get any hurricanes or tropical storms on the equator or near it, because you can't get any spin. Storms spin because of Coriolis force acting on winds which normally transport heat from the equator to the poles. These won't develop into anything. But what will happen later in the year when this tongue of ITCZ storms spitting out from Africa gets farther north?
