In Loving Memory......
For the younger people who never had the privelege of watching this great man you have no idea how good he was at what he did. A true giant in the field of tropical weather others now stand on the shoulders of his greatness. He personified what the weather channel "used" to be and unfortunately they have not continued the greatness he brought to them. I find myself wondering the last few years what would John have thought about watching Katrina the storm that finally erased the standard his daughter's name set for the upper Gulf coast.

Let me give you my take on John Hope. I agree, he was great. And this is why. He LOVED TROPICAL WEATHER for its own sake. He wasn't just a "numbers man". The man who took his place is a "numbers man". Does he really have a passion for tropical weather (which I think might lead to insight)? No, he'd rather quote wave heights and t-numbers and the like. And thats all good, but there's more to it than that. Do you ever feel like your getting a "view of the whole" when the replacement gives his report. I tell you, I just refuse to watch him. The only thing that I can see that he is passionate about are wave heights (related to surfing). But he doesn't love or honor these magnificent creatures we call tropical cyclones. Its just a job for him. No real insight provided, just the numbers please! For a description of him, and others like him, read my poem "Einstein's Brain". Its probably been moved back to a previous page now on the main "Talkin Tropics" board.

Amen to that...me too.

Likewise. I almost went into Meteorology as well, but ended up in Physics and Math instead.

John Hope was a wonderful man. He is a good part of the reason I got into weather. I learned a bit from him and I even recorded every Tropical Update when I could. I wish he was still with us, but he always will be in our hearts and minds as more Hurricane seasons come and go. He now gets to track all the storms and he has a GREAT view of them now. May he rest in Peace.
This ones for you Mr. Hope

I know what you mean Stormraider. But the people miss what we had before. Have you seen that replacement? I thought he would have been out after the first year. But what's it been now, 6 years?? He'll give you what appears to be the pertinent numbers for this situation or for that, but he gives you no overall perspective. His language skills are also lacking, making it difficult to know the relative importance of this or that piece of info. As far as I can see, no one is learning anything from his presentation, and he is completely irrelevant. Hang on a little while and I'll tell you what I really think, lol
