State of Emergency called for LA

#1 Postby dixiebreeze » Fri Aug 17, 2007 6:39 pm

CNN news just announced that Gov. Blanco has just called for a State of Emergency based on Hurricane Dean. The first state governor to do so.

Guess they want an early heads-up this time around.

It does seem a little early for that. I feel sorry for the residents - now they don't know what to do - they see the news like everyone else. It's just too early to tell. LA better be careful with that type of knee jerk reaction -- people won't take them seriously next time.

I suspect it's not so much some sort of declaration that she's confident a storm will make landfall there. But most states require something like that in order for certain laws to be 'activated' that cover everything from price-gouging to allowing the government to buy certain things on an as-needed on-the-spot basis rather than having to go through an extended competitive bidding process to taking steps to make it easy to call out the national guard if need be.

It's more of a procedural deal at this point than anything else.

It was a premature move. But, I expect nothing less from our governor. She should have declared a state of emergency the day she took office almost 4 years ago. The woman is a complete embarrassment, and a horrible governor.
