With a mainland strike, evacuation is a key part of hurricane safety. How do you prepare for a storm (even if it isn't a monster like Dean) on an island?
I'm not asking to be difficult, I'm genuinely curious.
Serious question

Re: Serious question
I would like for someone from the islands to answer this. However, it is my understanding that most of the islands have some shelters that are available for those whose homes are not substantial. Past that there isn't a lot one can do unless you leave the island totally.
A little more detail-these shelters are very substantial, basically concrete buildings(bunkers??)built to withstand just about anything. If I am incorrect feel free to correct me, but this is something I read in another thread from the Carribean.

Re: Serious question
I live on St. Maarten. Prior to Hurricane Luis we did not really take hurricane preparation all that seriously. Now most businesses and many homes have hurricane shutters. Most everyone else boards up their windows. Having been hit by many hurricanes since Luis, we are quite good at preparation. We remove anything from yards that can fly, stock up with non-perishable food, fill up baths and buckets with water and listen to the radio. About 6 or 7 schools are opened as shelters for those who fear their homes are not strong enough. Much like anywhere else really except the evacuation..airport usually closes well in advance as planes are flown to safer locations so no chance to wait and see before deciding to leave or not.
