I heard him say Cat 1; in his opinion, possibly a Cat 2. Where did you get Cat 3 from that video?

Better check his 4am update talking about the explosion of the Euro in his face as it backed down on development. He's now quite doubtful of development, as am I.

That video was from 5pm Wednesday afternoon, after the VDM's came out, but before the TWO. He said "We have a tropical depression, 1005 MB" ... "Could be a Cat 2" ... and... "you heard it here first!"

Oh, boy - what some will do to stir things up...
The man is only hurting himself by making such dire (and obviously untrue) statements - in the end, it only destroys his credibility...

Here is J.B.'s take from his column as of 11:15 A.M. this Thursday.
Time will tell about this prediction.
But no, the call is still 970 mb or lower Sat night or Sunday near ILM (the southern, not northern one).
Time will tell about this prediction.

Agreed 100% on your statement. Its not his place to classify a system. As for his storm prediction; Its not his prediction that something may yet develope that really surprised me, its his thinking of a 970 MB or lower Storm by Saturday Night Or Sunday.

I personally have no problem with Accuweather or other private weather sources classifying something as a depression that has not officially been declared one yet. People should rely on the NHC for official information, but if a well-trained met or group of mets from a private source want to call something a depression before it is official...then I have no problem with that. As long as private sources do not start trying to issue their own warnings and call for evacuations, then I see no big deal in them saying what they believe. After all, they are professional meteorologists who must know what they are talking about and have good reason for calling something a depression or storm before it is official from the NHC.
BTW: JB called this a depression yesterday, not today. At that time, there is a decent chance that this system actually was briefly a depression. It will be interesting to see if it is eventually upgraded in post analysis.

Agreed.
People hate on JB far too much...he does give valuable insight....as much so as the NHC imo.

As much as I personally dislike Accuweather you can't knock JB for doing what 80% of the posters in here do too. He's just making a living at it.

Shouldn't it make a difference that he suppose to be a professional though, and not someone sitting in his living room posting on a message board?

JB's problem is he is supposed to be a professional but also an entertainer and I don't believe the two mix very well.

Anyone think Rush Limbaugh is a journalist? He berates people daily with a lot more credentials in that department that he will ever have simply because he doesn't like their point of view. I'm not defending JB or Rush here. The difference between the two is one is supposed to be a professional meteorologist and act like it but he learned that doesn't increase audience share. He refuses to verify his forecasts and like his company will never admit mistakes. Since he loves the cameras he'd make a perfect replacement for Proenza to direct his loyal senior forecast team. The media would love him!

JB never verifies his forecasts and never admits his mistakes? What are you talking about?! Out of all the mets I have ever read/seen, he is by far one of the best at doing just that. He goes back over and verifies most of his forecasts and he always admits his mistakes. In fact, he even grades himself on his hurricane season, winter, and summer forecasts after the period is over...and he has given himself "F's" for certain areas many times. He, like all others, is not perfect...but he will definitely let you know when he was wrong.Downdraft wrote:Anyone think Rush Limbaugh is a journalist?
