Hurricane Georges Anniversary

#1 Postby cycloneye » Thu Sep 20, 2007 11:09 pm

Hurricane Georges was one of the most strongest hurricane to make landfall in Puerto Rico.It came to our eastern shores on the 21rst of September late in the afternoon. It was the first hurricane that I passed in a Condominiun. It shaked a bit when those hurricane force winds blew thru. The aftermath was horrible as we were around 3 weeks without power and water. The whole damages estimated and deaths related to Georges is below.

Damages estimated to exceed $2 billion. Three direct deaths; nine others from medical complications (heart attacks, etc.). Power and water out to 80% of the 3.8 million people on island. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) estimates 33,113 homes destroyed in Puerto Rico, with nearly 50,000 more suffering major or minor damage. The storm destroyed 75 percent of the coffee crop, 95 percent of Puerto Rico's plantains, and 65 percent of its chickens.

In this thread those who were in the path of Georges can post their experiences.

Hi cycloneye, tkanks for this anniversary thread , i want to congratulate you for this type of thread...very pertinent and interresting...bringing i hope more informations on this feature, our experiences... and by extension emphasizes on our way of life, our philosophy in terms of preparations etc...that's a good thing! One word for Hurricane Georges in this 21th of September in Guadeloupe: LUCK!. Back to back on Georges:
Georges was expected to be the HURRICANE of the century in Guadeloupe after HUGO 1989, the forecasts were amazing talking about in theirs lastest forecasts to something like that: "we expected huge waves higher than 15 meters and sustained winds of 250k/m and gusts at 300 km/h and much higher"...only one day before its eventual path directly on Guadeloupe...a nightmare in store for us and my untrained eyes...or my eyes were deceiving me??? ! But hopefuly at only less than 300 km Geoges decided to head more north and weakens quickly from a strong cat 4 to a cat" little cat 3" (180km/h) due to strong shear and others factors (that i won't speak about too long lol)...and the eye crossing beetween Guadeloupe and Antigua the center localized at 30 km of the extrem north tip of the island...but that's enough north...and that's good news for the island...only Ts winds have been reported: 65 km/h to 70km/h sustained winds with gusts at 90/110 kmh in north tip of the island and not much rain 40 to 70 mm during the episode... only a region of the island has kept the maxima of 146 mm  lol ( not so bad too  ).
As a conclusion, as far i'm concerned we could said that we have escaped from a very very very very SERIOUS candidate, i was very well prepared and that was very calm in my location very light winds light showers. Note that for Georges, the alerts have been put very ealier and quickly... maybe... a little earlier than what was expected bringing some upstets comportements in the majority of the residents staying confined too early maybe?! By the way, that's always a challenge in putting alerts in this island...difficult to admit , but i'm more convinced that i'm maybe right, the examples years after years seems testifying it ... and when i heard in the street or in the radio most of theirs thougts ... they are always unhappy... when it's too early or too late for any cane ... folks! :spam:
All in all, in this case of Hurricane Georges tkanks to the authorities... that's better like that for the reasons that we all guess (Did you remember Marylin in a thread last week, you will understand why!). Whereas we should keep in mind that each hurricane is different...so meaning that " the perfect choice" is always something special lol)! In a nutshell, Georges were very very very pleased with us compared to Puerto Rico and my friends of ...Antigua,Montserrat, Barbuda, Nevis, ST Kitts...  ...bye bye mister Georges :spam: :cheesy: :D

What are you looking for, Punky? When you've been in a hurricane on an island where there's no other choice than ride it out, when you've lost everything because of a hurricane, when people close to you died because of a hurricane, there is no childish excitement, trust me.

Read this:
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Bulldozing across Puerto Rico on September 21, 1998, Hurricane Georges served up a powerful reminder of what nature can do: rivers overflowed, trees were strewn like matchsticks across highways, and 4 million people were left without power.

At least five Puerto Ricans were killed - along with at least six others who died as a result of the storm elsewhere in the Caribbean. Damages reached $2 billion.

Although accustomed to hurricanes every few years, Puerto Ricans were stunned by the widespread impact of Georges. Its 110 mph winds spared not an inch of the U.S. territory as it swept westward after hitting ground late September 21,1998.

President Clinton declared Puerto Rico a disaster area.

Georges raked the island, denuding hillsides, toppling power lines, peeling off roofs. Road signs on the Luis A. Ferre Expressway simply disappeared, billboards were flung aside and street debris ranged from porch awnings to a Gulf gasoline station sign.

As the rains receded, rivers swelled, overflowing their banks in the northern coastal towns of Arecibo and Barceloneta. The tree-lined streets of Barceloneta were under 4 feet of water, and more than 200 homes lost their roofs.

In the capital of San Juan, where almost half the island's people live, the typical sight was that of downed trees - in some areas most were felled onto roads or broken in half. Some flooded roads were impossible to traverse.

There were also many downed power lines - so many that all of Puerto Rico was blacked out. The state power company urged retirees to report to work and asked for help from private contractors. Damage to the power grid alone was estimated at $60 million.

In the east coast town of Humacao, 4 feet of water surged into the municipal government building. The police headquarters in the central city of Caguas was destroyed. In the southern city of Ponce, which suffered some of the worst winds and rain, damage totaled $50 million.

Damage was expected to far exceed that of Hurricane Hugo in 1989, which crossed only the northeast corner of the island and paralyzed San Juan for weeks.

The home of Paula Aponte Figueroa had its roof blown off and deposited on top of the house of her neighbor, Pedro Juan Morales. It even stripped the paneling off the walls inside Aponte's wooden home in San Juan's Hato Rey section.

''This thing was a monster,'' said Morales, who lost part of his roof and suffered flood damage. ''Hugo was a little breeze compared to this.''

I've been wondering: What is with your fascination with the 'SPAM' and 'Happy Birthday' emoticons?

Ahhh.... ok ok ok ok for the spam nothing serious just to say that if it were a Warner Bros comportement we shoud sweep it erase that if possible" in humble opinion, that's not a critics just an free opinion and that's not my goal here to critic... but when you're living on an island and a cat 3 is churning near you , it is not something to play with...so i put the spam for that. Concerning the happy birthday heuu i don't know .... in what post?. Don't forget and keep in mind that all is very subjective here in everbody's reply, that's not easy to understand each other (sensibility, and many other factors play an important role ) the whole thought of somebody ....in spite of the fact that we're discussing weather!!!.... so i try to do my best in terms of using emoticons...but meaning is always subjective.... and i hope everytime that i was respectful with everbody :D   = happy
:bday: = i'm happy and i imagine in head a fiesta where everbody is happy, there's friendly links in spite of the location in the world....hope i put some clearence for you and everbody gerit :P
