interesting to listen to CNN and reports about possible race issues...that the people needing rescue and stranded in NOLA are there because they are black. And not half an hour before then they interviewed someone that had been evacuated during the night from the Ritz Carelton hotel along with i believe several hundred others. They had doctors with them at the hotel that "liberated" (note NOT looted) anti-biotics from a drug store by the hotel...and then they were evacuated by bus complete with armed to the teeth escort WITH escort helicopterS.

I don't think this is a race issue....but if you have CASHHHH....now thats a different story

The evacuation of Superdome refugees was interrupted briefly when school buses rolled up so some 700 guests and employees from the Hyatt hotel. They were move to the head of the line to be evacuated -- much to the amazement of those who had been crammed in the stinking Superdome for days.


The 700 had been trapped in the Hyatt just like the others, but conditions were considerably cleaner, even without running water, than the unsanitary crush inside the dome.

Yep, the age-old - AND OBVIOUS - observation. Who here is surprised that WEALTHY people (regardless of color) get treated differently?

What was the white population of NO? I heard what - 28 percent? I'd say there are more than a few poor whites in the mix. One photo I remember is this big black guy wading through water, carrying in his arms this stick-thin elderly white lady. I also remember the photo of two white guys and a boat - carrying black kids in their arms as the kids' moms were climbing into the boat.

I'm betting that the media sees the extra mileage they can get by stirring the pot with the racial angle. I'd bet that they deliberately avoid crowd footage with too many white faces present. Shame on them, and on the politicians who are trying to milk this to attack the president and his party. Further, according to Jesse Jackson LAST NIGHT - people hadn't had meals for FIVE days. Heard him live. Today, he said (I was watching live) that the authorities knew about the situation at the convention center for FIVE days as well.

We are told to prepare all of the time - to have a FIVE DAY SUPPLY of food and water due to possible response times. As bad as Katrina was, they still have things a LOT better in FOUR days.

Why are the feds and local govs being crucified for "shoulda known better" and "shoulda hadda plan in place" and "shoulda done somethin' sooner"? This all should first hit the ears of the people themselves.

Uh, the proper amount of food and water is THREE WEEKS worth, per person...because, despite the "armchair FEMA" hindsight posts, NO Government on any level can wave a magic wand and respond with ALL the resources to take care of a disaster of this magnitude instantly. Period.

Three weeks seems a little extreme. Personally, I stock my kit for 10 days. I figure if things aren't improving in 5 or 6 days, I can always pack the rest and hike to somewhere where food and water can be got.
