Gov. Perry says TX nearing capacity

#1 Postby Eye10TX » Sat Sep 03, 2005 10:36 pm

Governor Perry said today that Texas is nearing capacity ... we have 220,000 evacuees in public & private shelters, plus an unknown number in private homes.

We have 33,000 at the Astrodome/Reliant complex, plus 2000 right now at George R. Brown and 6000 more expected from the Cajundome in Lafayette. (That's what the reporter said, but I think there are 26,000 in Astrodome/Reliant and 8000 more expected at GRB, for a total of 34,000.)

All NOLA evacuees are being funneled through Houston currently, for forwarding to other TX shelters.

San Antonio announced tonight that they are "full" and that was just after arrival of 8,000 today--don't know their total, but it was supposed to be 25,000.

Still many, many people are in NOLA and needing to be evac'ed. Local (Houston) 10PM News reporter was just in the Garden District and heard gunshots a few blocks over.

The worst is that the very last people left are the ones who are the worst off. Many, many still in their homes, not knowing anything of the outside world, or that evac operations are going on. Many elderly.

Same situation at the airport--the sickest ones are the last ones able to leave--others rush forward and get the places on the buses and helicopters. The morgue at the airport has the bodies of those who have died there in triage--and those who are close to death have been put in the same area, because of the overwhelming conditions there (I believe there are 8000 there--could be wrong--hearing so many numbers).

::very sad tonight::

More buses going to NOLA

#2 Postby Eye10TX » Sat Sep 03, 2005 10:57 pm

Houston ISD is sending 135 school buses, plus 280 drivers, mechanics and security people to get another 6000 evacuees in NOLA.

Guess TX is still finding room for more!

We heard that there's a need for school desks because kids are having to sit on the floors.

Here in Galveston, we have a handful of shelters full here and in Texas City. But we're not done yet -- still awaiting the two cruise ships to dock here with over 2600 survivors. Like they say, there's always room for one more at the table. :)
