IRVING, Texas - A 2-year-old girl who fled Hurricane Katrina with her family drowned Sunday at the Summerfield Suites' pool located on the 5900 block of MacArthur Boulevard in Irving.

The young girl was rushed to the Las Colinas Medical Center, but it was too late for doctors to save her life.

Irving police said the child was found in a hot tub located by the hotel's swimming pool. A 15-year-old cousin was supposed to watch the child while the mother went to do laundry nearby, investigators said. At some point, the young girl was left alone and was later found underwater.

Police said the family was from New Orleans and had been living at the hotel after losing everything to Hurricane Katrina. Police also said the young girl's father was working in Amarillo when the drowning occurred.

First they lost everything in the storm and now their child   I can't even begin to imagine how this family can go on, that's just too much for someone to handle.
