More people died in the Houston/Galveston evacuation from Rita (over 70) than die from most U.S. hurricanes. There are many, many things that will have to be done better next time.

The fact that people stayed because they were okay during Camille...
This many years have passed and she is still racking up the toll.

I live in MS and I have not heard this.

No one could have predicted a storm surge of this magnitude.

You are right about the surge Lindaloo. The quote is from an official in the Biloxi area. Not sure who he was with, but I do remember it.

Thanks David.

I know that some decided to stay in their homes because they survived Camille. I can assure you though, when they issue mandetory evacs for people again, they will not think about Camille anymore, it will be Katrina and they will haul boogie out of here.

I believe it was A.J. Holloway - Biloxi's Mayor - who said Camille killed more people on August 29, 2005 than she did on August 17, 1969. In other words, Camille was the benchmark that no one thought could ever be topped. Hence, a lot stayed because their property survived Camille. Consequently, many of those folks are no longer with us. I believe he hit the nail on the head with that statement...

Galveston's evacuation went very well. It was Houston that got in the way. I work in Galveston and live just across the big bridge, but since I spend most of my waking hours here, I still think of Lyda as my mayor!:-)

I also talked to a UTMB management person today, who gave me some insight about how Katrina affected Galveston's plans. She said that they took the issue of people evacuating with their animals VERY seriously, and they made sure that it was widely publicized during Rita. They saw what happend during Katrina, and how many people stayed behind because of their pets, and they decided that the way to ensure more people are safe is to make sure they know they don't have to leave anyone behind.

Not exactly; it was the 200 miles of freeway between HWY. 242 in The Woodlands and Ennis that got in the way, or the 150 miles of freeway between Katy and Seguin that got in the way, and so on; not Houston itself.

Both the Mayor of Galveston and the Mayor of Houston did an excellent job.

Oh, I think Bill White did a great job to, with what he had to contend with. What I actually meant was the population of Houston. When the general Houston area started to evacuate, the folks who were on the coast and near waterways were still trying to get out, so we all got stuck.
