Accounts by roadside-relief workers support poll findings that traffic jams on evacuation routes during Hurricane Rita were probably worsened by families who left home in more than one vehicle, a highway department spokeswoman said last week.

This is true. I know many personally who took all their vehicles. I have mixed emotions about this. I completely understand the argument that the point of the evacuation is to get people out of harm's way. That's by far the most important objective. On the other hand, if I lived in a surge zone, you better believe I'd cram as much stuff as I can in my 2 vehicles. I don't think there's any way to prevent this.

Also....many people who evacuated with more cars than they usually use were doing so in order to take family pets along with them....animals can take up a lot of room! I don't think you can fault people for that....
