I agree rather harsh punishment.
Its called cruel and unusual punishment though I'm guessing his court appointed attorney didn't bring that up in his sentencing hearing. I am sure he will have appeals and maybe get the sentence reduced. He does deserve some time and hopefully will be rehabilitated.
