I don't think that will be able to navigate through the streets of NO. They will do this by transporting people in small craft to a near-by area where they can stage a massive evac.

My thought was to drive those up and down the Mississippi.

As the waters continued to rise in New Orleans, four Navy ships raced toward the Gulf Coast with drinking water and other emergency supplies, and Red Cross workers from across the country converged on the devastated region. The Red Cross reported it had about 40,000 people in 200 shelters across the area in one of the biggest urban disasters the nation has ever seen.

This paragraph is repeated throughout 100's of news reports but I don't see any additional detail. I wonder how close the ships can get and how they will distribute the supplies? I suppose the Navy will have use helicopters to get the water and supplies into the city. I imagine it makes the most sense to transport the supplies to a central location where it will do the most good, such as the dome.

I know Mobile has cruise ship and we are fairly close enough to get there. I am assuming they are nearby. I think that is a great idea!

CNN just reported that Carnival is working with the government about this very idea. They say it's complicated, but they're looking at the feasibility of it, and will work it out if possible.

I believe the 22nd meu is in Norfolk getting ready to replace the 26th (My brother is with as a recon marine) would be ideal. The 15th meu was instrumental during the Tsunami relief effort as they can ride over submerged debris. Also, alot of heavy lift helos and combat ready marines make this the best solution imho

12:55 A.M. - MIAMI (AP) -- Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines says it is considering a federal request that the company use some of its cruise ships as emergency shelters or help in Hurricane Katrina relief efforts in some other way.
