I have a question as I have absolutly no clue about this.
I was always under the impression that a gas station sets the prices based on what they bought that tank of gas for. When they buy the next tank load, the new prices would reflect what they paid for it.
The station I go to regularly has increased their prices up to and over 3 times daily. They are expecting a new load tomorrow morning. This is the same load from a week ago when prices were under 240 a gallon......Someone please explain to me how this is........

So is the threat of running out of gas nationwide a problem??
I have to travel this weekend quite a distance and I don't want to get stranded.

It *seems* to only be a problem down here... so unless your headed to the Gulf Coast, you should be fine.
I think the problem is our fuel comes from those refineries shut down by the storm.

BP is always the highest...
The cheapest are always the off-brands(non-Exxon/Chevron/etc.) and Wal-Mart...

Call your local price gouging hotlines people.
Gas is still available. Its the stores that are ripping people off.
I see a 50 cents a gallon difference in stores around this area. Why would one store suddenly be 50 cents more than yesterday when they haven't received a new truck yet?
Gas prices are only allowed to go up so much at a time

Wholesale gas prices paid by station owners have risen anywhere from 13 cents to 68 cents a gallon this week, depending on the supplier, said Jim Smith, president and CEO of the Florida Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association Inc. in Tallahassee. If one station's price is higher than another, he said, it could mean the more expensive one received a more recent refill of its own.
"They can't raise the price by law under a state of emergency until they get new product," Smith explained.

Oh... sorry to sound self absorbed. I am really not. I just heard the people in NC and SC talking running out and I took notice.

To be honest... I question whether the stations are really "running out" or if it's just to get people to panic buy...

Do these rules apply country wide or just Fla????
This has been ongoing here in SC........And especially at the BP station.
My husband even ASKED today if they just got a new batch of gas and the manager said no, not until tomorrow, but he raises the prices because corporate says to raise them.

According to FoxNews, the station that priced their pumps at $5.87 today did so becuase "they wanted to discourage people from buying so that they wouldn't run out." That's about as ridiculous an excuse as I could imagine. They should be taken to jail. That is how panic starts and that could have started every other station in town to start a price spiral!
On my way home tonight in Orlando, every gas station had a line spilling out onto the street. I couldn't figure if everyone was trying to fill up before the inevitable price spike or if it was just unnecessary panic. The only reason why we will run out of gas the next few days would be because of panic. Thus panic would fulfill the "prophecy."
People need to calm down! There WILL be gas. It WILL be expensive for the next few weeks. It will take at least 2-3 weeks for several of the refineries that were only slightly damaged to make necessary repairs and to get back on line.
We do not have a shortage of oil, but rather a shortage of facilities to refine it into gas. We haven't built a new refinery in the U.S. for 30 years (because of the enviro wackos) and we had better start getting serious about building more in various parts of the country. We have a major dependence on fossil fuels to run our vehicles and it will be at least 20-30 years before any alternative fuel research pays off!

Food for thought for those defending the gas stations/distributors/oil companies/corporate raising prices just because gas is in short supply and the country is in crisis.
What if it was water in New Orleans and Desani was there with this short supply water and charging the looters $5 a bottle or a whole case for a 20" TV? What if it was the drug companies charging the NO police $50 for a technis shot? What if it was a Steel Company charging double for its product just because China is buying all of it up? Oh wait that happened last year in my industry.
The big corporations control all the raw commodities and when they get a chance to stick it to our wallets they waist no time doing so. They could care less what it does to the economy because the only people who loose are the people who depend on jobs to pay their bills. The President of BP probably makes more on his year-end bonus than you or I will make in our lifetime.
Remember everything we get comes by boat, train or truck and they all need fuel.
