Members that were in the path of Katrina
Moderator: S2k Moderators
Hi. Alacane here. We just got our power back here in my part of West Mobile. We had three trees fall. Two fell on the house, and one punctured a hole in the ceiling. The kitchen leaked some and there is some roof/ceiling damage. Just thankful that it was not worse here. I am just seeing images from Mississippi and Louisiana. I can not believe my eyes.

Just catching up now that we are back home again. Amazingly, our power came back on just an hour after we got home!
It's good to hear that members are safe. I'm feeling so fortunate that we only have a hole in our roof where the chimney blew down. Hearing and seeing so many others in much worse shape is quite compelling and saddening. I am praying for the day when that list is completely updated with everyone safe! I hope that day comes very soon. God bless everyone affected by this disaster. And thanks, y'all, for being such a wonderful and compassionate group!

Frank P responded!
I had seen Frank's description about his homemade shutters on this site and like the rest of you, I was concerned. I remembered that he had posted his personal email address so I gave it a shot. Thank God he's OK. Following is his response.

**********FROM FRANK:
Thanks for your concern and that of all the Storm2k family members... Majority of our families thus far are OK.... still have not heard from some, so a little concerned.... hard to count all the brothers and sisters of my wife and me that have lost everything.... Wife and I along with my two bassets are fine... .I lost everything totally but I can rebuild, Oh I have a nice concrete stab and all my ceramic flooring is still there... NOTE: could not find ANY identifyable part of my house including the nice shutters I built on posted in the hurricane preps forum... next time I'll need to build stronger shutters I guess.. weathered the storm in Biloxi on Benachi Street on the north side of the RR... water up to the first step of house... unbelievable...
Conditions in Biloxi are unimaginable... Had to leave immediately Wife and I left on Tuesday, now in Nashville with daughter to plan our future strategies and regrouping actions on whats next for us... still have both our jobs and wife will probably go back to support Mississippi Power Co operations shortly, depending on gas situation....
will post on Strom2K later this week.... you can post this if you like....
I am really concerned about a lot of friends that did not get out of harms way, especially in Long Beach, Waveland and Bay St. Louis... Camille has always been our benchmark... that gave coastal residents a false sense of security relative to this storm... several mets in Biloxi we saying this would be like Betsy.. I THINK NOT... storm surge with Katrina was MUCH MUCH worse than Camille. Both my large Oaks tree did great, but one has serious debris marks 8 feet above the ground, which is 20 above sea level... so were looking at least 28 feet at my house, minimum.. this had to have a super Cat 5 surge that Katrina brought with it...... most people did not have a chance or clue... including me... I AM SO GLAD I GOT OFF THE BEACH.. this was the first hurricane that I ever evacuated off the beach for... if not, I would be dead...
again, thanks for your concern and that of the storm2k family....
The people of the Gulf Coast needs everyone's help so despirately..

Oh, my God! I am so glad to hear Frank and his family are okay. He and I had exchanged posts about the hurricane shutters. This all is just too much! Now that we're home, I've been watching the news and it is just heartbreaking to see what has happened. It's a bit confusing because on the one hand you're so grateful that you made it through okay and rejoice when you hear from those who survived but on the other hand all the loss of life and destruction is almost too much to hear. Just so much sadness. All we can do is pray for everyone.

^About Sean in New Orleans
Okay, I haven't been around here long to know anyone well, but I ran across this in a Yahoo! Article and it made me wonder if it was him.
This story on this link may be updated, because I think Yahoo! just has one, on-going, Katrina link.
"Sean Jeffries of New Orleans had already been evacuated from one French Quarter hotel when he was ordered out of a second hotel Tuesday because of rising water.
The 37-year-old banker — who admitted to looting some food from a nearby supermarket — said the hotel guests were told they were being taken to a convention center, but from there, they didn't know.
"We're in the middle of a national tragedy," he said as he popped purloined grapes in his mouth. "But I know this city. We will be back. It may take awhile. But we will be back."
Oh, I do hope that Sean is the "Sean in New Orleans" that posts here.
I've not been able to get out of my mind the picture of him, his 2 dogs, a cat and a couple friends all riding this hurricane out in windowless hotel room. I really hope they are all safe.

Wasn't Ixolib the person that was convinced that because the house had withstood Camille that he/she could ride out this one. I seem to remember a number of posts that talked about staying no matter what the Category of the storm. I think he listed his elevation at 22 ft. or something like that.
I sure hope that all of the ones that haven't checked in are ok.

Hi all, ScorpDream here....
We just got our power on earlier this evening. We live in Mobile. We had two larger limbs fall and a leak from shingles blown up (partially helped by Ivan Last year)...but other than that we are fine. I know lots of people in MS, as my husband works in Pascagoula and may GOD bless each and everyone affected. We have heard lots of first hand accounts and they are not at all pretty. God knows everything but likes to hear the prayers none the less. Thanks all.

Under occupation on his profile here, it says banking industry. I checked it before I posted because if it hadn't been the same type of job, I wouldn't have posted it.

Good, I didn't bother to check...(ooppss) Last year seems so long ago.
But I recall him mentioning a hotel. Maybe it was one of his friends who worked at the hotel. But I do recall him stating he was staying at a hotel for the evac last year. he felt safe there.

I know what you mean. If he is among the dome refugees now, I hope he is here in Houston and thinks to contact some of us here. We can be of help.

I'm really glad to hear from Frank.
I don't personally know anyone from that area. I had posted a comment to him about his shutters, while we were getting our brush from Katrina. In a strange way he was a link (for me) to the suffering and damage in MS.
I had Googled his address from the pixs he posted and was sort of obsessed with looking for those blue shutters while watching tv coverage.
Frank, sorry for your losses, hope your loved ones are all safe, post when you can. I'm sure you have a story we can all learn from.
Ps. Good choice on seeking higher ground. Some may have been tempted to ride it out just from a misguided pride in the labors they put into their preparations.
Be prepared but live to fight another day. Scott
