23,000 on way to Houston

#1 Postby JenBayles » Wed Aug 31, 2005 3:06 pm

Just heard it on 700 KSEV radio. They're asking for volunteers to help get the Dome ready to receive people when they get here sometime this evening. If Houston area folk can help, sign up through the Harris County Citizen Corps.

How'd they finally get them out?!

I posted this on another forum, hopefully they'll be able to house them reasonably comfortably.

As far as I know, they're not out yet, but they're trying to evacuate them.

As long as the A/C and toilets work, at least it will be a step up from where they've been. :(

At the astrodome, they are clearing everything on the floor level in an attempt to place 20,000 cots on the floor of the dome. That should be a lot better then the Superdome.

We haven't been sure for what purpose we were keeping our beloved dome , but we never the less wanted to hang on to her. Now she can not only enjoy a little spotlight but more importantly serve an important purpose. I am glad we can help our neighbors to the east. :)

I was thinking the same. So glad they haven't torn it down yet!

That's right - we Houstonians love our Astrodome and no matter how large the Reliant Stadium is, how great it is, how technologically advanced it is - the Astrodome is still first in our hearts.

And we are happy to see it used for such a good purpose!!

Just don't eat the hotdogs. They've been hanging there since the last Oilers game!!

My understanding is that the city of Houston is providing the busses.
Also, heartening is that Texas wants their local schools to somehow providing temporary schooling for all the kid refugees and the Texas university system is going to work with UNO, Tulane and other colleges in La. to take-in college students. SMU and GaTech have already taken some Tulane students.

From what I heard today, Georgia Tech is working with Tulane right now. I think most of their students are in Atlanta.
