I know there are a lot more important things to be concerned with, but all most of us can do is work hard to make sure EVERYONE donates and helps financially.
As expected, all members of The Association of American Universities is banding together to motivate donations and coordinate help for Tulane and other colleges affected. Below is an email my daughter received from the President at The University of Iowa:
University of Iowa students, staff and faculty,
Hurricane Katrina’s trail of devastation calls for an immediate response. The toll in loss of life, livelihood and property cannot yet be measured, but we know that those suffering in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi need our sympathy and generosity to help them cope with the aftermath of the hurricane and to begin putting their lives back together.
If you have not already done so, you can make an immediate donation to
the relief organizations that are attempting to provide food, water, shelter and medical attention to all of those in need. It is clear that the need will be great and continuing for weeks to come, if not months.
It is encouraging that already students, faculty and staff are making plans to offer assistance. In addition, we are working with other universities in the Association of American Universities to help students, faculty and staff at Tulane University, an AAU member. We are also eager to assist other colleges and universities in the area. The details remain to be worked out, but we will do our best to make you aware of developments in this effort and other efforts. If you have ideas for how best to help, please share them with us. Your responses can be sent to president@uiowa.edu.

University’s page on hurricane aid.

As a recent graduate from the University of Central Florida, I stand proud to know that my alma mater is stepping up to the plate to assist in this terrible multi-faceted disaster. I just recieved an Email instructing that they will accept displaced students at the "in state" tuition rate along with waiving certain fees. Admission is expedited and course registration will be available on a "space available" basis. This is how America functions best... through unity and compassion!!!!
I am sure other universities have or will follow suit in this manner to ensure that America will remain strong by ensuring that these displaced students have an academic future !!!!

Penn State will allow an expedited registration for those who were accepted to the institution but chose to go to a school in one of the affected areas instead, and the people will placed at one of the 24 campuses of Penn State. In addition, students whose families were gravely affected financially by the storm will be offered emergency tuition and financial aid to get through the remainder of the year.
