HI,
I have been working with a the West Palm Kiwanis club on purchasing about $4000 in supplies from my Tallahassee Wal-Mart store. The group will pick up supplies on Tuesday morning from us and head to Mobile Bay/Eastern Shore. Since this is my original home, they have asked me for a church to give the supplies to that could desperately use them. They would assist giving out the supplies but are more interested in just giving the supplies away. I am suggesting Christ the King. Beach Bum or another from this area thats still in the area, could you please give me some info.
They want a contact name, address of the church and a number to reach someone. If anyone has any good ideas, please PM or post.
Thank You all!

The contact info for Christ the King is: (251) 626-1692 1503 Main St Daphne, AL. Father Timothy Deasy is their pastor. However, I'm not aware of any shelters in the Daphne or Fairhope area. I do know that the Robertsdale Coliseum (Baldwin County) is being used as a shelter for some refugees from MS and LA. Therefore, I'd suggest you might want to contact St. Patrick's in Robertsdale [(251) 947-5054 23035 Highway 59 N Robertsdale, AL 36567]. I can't remember who the pastor is over there. I can, also, tell you that Bayou La Batre in Mobile County was hit very hard- their shrimp boats are trashed and many homes were severely damaged or destroyed. You could probably make donations to St. Margaret's down there. Father Tim Evans is their pastor. I'm not sure if their phones are working down there but here's their info: (251) 824-2415 13790 S Wintzell Ave Bayou La Batre, AL. If you can't get in touch with Father Tim Evans, you could contact Father Maher at St. Rose of Lima just up the road a bit from Bayou La Batre [(251) 973-2592 2951 Durette Ave Coden, AL]. In addition, Our Savior Lutheran Church in Mobile is a shelter. Here's their info: (251) 661-4524 5101 Government Blvd Mobile, AL. Hope some of this info is useful for you.
UPDATE: Just received an e-mail from a friend from Daphne. Daphne Civic Center is expecting 350 refugees tomorrow. So Christ the King might be a very good contact.

Mahicks,
I just sent you a personal message about a small church community in Bayou La Batre, Alabama that is in desperate need. If anyone else is interested in helping this small, poor community, let me know.

THIS IS DEFINITELY AN AREA THAT DOES NEED HELP. They have not been on the news much, but were hit just as hard as some of the other coastal communities like Pascagoula, Biloxi, etc. I have heard that out of 2300 structure, including homes, over 2000 were either totally destroyed or are being condemened.

Here's a story about Bayou La Batre in today's local paper:
http://www.al.com/news/mobileregister/index.ssf?/base/news/112591192334960.xml&coll=3 I would suggest coontacting the church (St. Margaret's) listed in my above post or contact Mobile County Commisioner Mike Dean's office (251)574-3000 (that is his district). Or you could try to contact Bayou La Batre directly: 251 824-2171.
Also, I have some family and friends headed downtown to help prepare a shelter there and to help coordinating. Our local Catholic Charities office
((251) 434-1500 555 Dauphin St Mobile, AL 36602) is setting up those. I'm sidelined for now as I managed to hurt my foot doing yard clean-up-- am I not grace herself?! Also, I warn those doing clean-up to beware of the insects because they are going nuts. We found ourselves in a swarm of wasps yesterday! They weren't there and then they suddenly were. So, be careful out there folks!

Scorpdream and Baygirl,
I just returned from Bayou La Batre. Our church in Naples, Florida had just finished collecting a huge amount of relief supplies, and we drove up with a big truck and a trailer and delivered it all to the Bayview Church of the Nazarene in Bayou La Batre. It is located on East Rabby Street.
The people who live in that area are extremely poor. As I know both of you are aware, it is the community where they filmed the Forest Gump movie. A small seafood fishing town, the shrimp boats were destroyed and thrown up on the land by the storm surge. I have never seen as poor a community as this one. They are in desperate need.
Anyone who wants to help can contact me by personal message, and I can give you contact information if you want to help the people of Bayou La Batre by delivering relief to this church. The aid is being distributed to anyone in this community who shows up. All are welcome. What we delivered - which was thousands of pounds of water, food, toiletries, etc. - was quickly delivered, so they could use so much more. They have no power, no drinkable water, no food...

I go to Dayspring Baptist in Mobile. They have a huge effort, which most of is going to Bayou LaBatre, involving the Mobile Area Food Bank. We are actually getting in tractor trailer loads from all over and sorting them, packaging them up, and distributing them. Some people still can't get to the shelters, etc. to get the supplies and I know they are actually plaanning on if need be to drive around in BLB and get those to the people. This whole event is so overwhelming & heartbreaking. So if you can't for some reason get into BLB again or for whatever reason, please contact Dayspring. We are trying to make sure that they all get enough of everytrhing, not a whole box of chicken broth type of thing. The boxes have vegtables, soups, granola bars, dry milk products, crackers, snacks, chips, can openers, canned meats, etc. They also have a different are in our church that is doing toilitries, baby stuff, etc. God Bless EVERYONE!
