I heard it on Fox News a few minutes ago as well. Not the time to be messing with the authorities.

Oh no, just heard on fox news those people might have been army corps of engineer contracts that were carrying guns on a bridge. I hope this isn't true.

Fox is reporting that they were contractors on their way to help fix a canal.
But that it is unconfirmed. AP is reporting this though.

NEW ORLEANS (AP)--Police shot eight people carrying guns on a New Orleans bridge Sunday, killing five or six, a deputy chief said. A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers said the victims were contractors on their way to repair a canal. The contractors were walking across a bridge on their way to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain to fix the 17th Street Canal, said John Hall, a spokesman for the Corps. Earlier Sunday, New Orleans Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley said police shot at eight people, killing five or six. The shootings took place on the Danziger Bridge, which spans a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River. No other details were immediately available.

Between police taking part in the lootings and this, I think it's time for a serious reevaulation of the competency of the NOPD.

I understand they are weary but if someone isn't looting or overtly breaking the law, you don't just shoot them. They should have asked the people on the bridge who they were and why they were carrying guns before shooting. And not just shooting but shooting to kill.

I can't believe the communications between all the different agencies are still this bad. I read where tons of communicaiton equipment was coming in...this is just horrible if its true. What a sad sad situation with the good guys shooting the good guys, and the bad guys..well, I would suspect SOME of the "thugs" have already ditched their weapons and blended in with the other evacuees considering the influx of armed troops. Just another heartbreak, on top of a very heartbreaking week.
