On the way back from Waveland/Bay St. Louis. (Update)

#1 Postby beachbum_al » Mon Sep 05, 2005 10:36 am

My husband, his friend, and his friend's wife are headed to Bay St. Louis and Waveland right now. Our friend (wife) is from Waveland. Her mom and sisters rode out the hurricane in their house in Waveland. They are okay physically but lost almost everything. So they are down there with fish for about 70 people. Wish we had more.

Anyway we were looking at wlox website and my friend was showing me her town. Completely gone! It is so sad. She was telling what used to be there, etc. And she has been back since the storm but she said to walk through the town and see it is completely different than watching the videos and pictures online.

To hear the stories from people is so heartbreaken. She was telling about her sisters who rode out the storm with their mom. It is terrifying to think what they went through during and after the storm.

I asked her how many people stayed in Waveland and she said at least 50% of the town. People thought it was hitting NO and they would be spare.

I think I am okay. I know I am one of the lucky ones and so is my friend's family. They are alive but I don't don't know how they are emotionally.

I know they will be okay. DH loves to fish and his hobby is going to feed people down there. He loves cooking. And I remember last year during Ivan people from all over came over and help us this way. I remember down in Orange Beach last year a group from New Orleans cooked Crawfish and Gumbo. I still have not forgotten the kindness of the people who helped us out last year.

One thing my friend said about the people over in Waveland is that there personal belongings might be gone but their hearts are not. They are helping each other and making what is left managable for all there. Once again the Human Spirit outshines tradegy.

DH just called about 30 minutes ago. They are almost there. He didn't say much but only that it didn't look. It is worse than what is played on t.v. Being there is a whole different ball game he said.

Update
Husband just called. They are about 40 miles from the State Line. I am gathering that he is near Biloxi because he said Biloxi had lights on. Anyway he said it is so sad. The whole Coast is wiped out. Waveland/Bay St. Louis looks like an atomic bomb went off and wiped every thing out. He said it is hard to comprehend what went on there.   But despite what has happen to the people there he said they had the most geniune outlook and strong will for people who have just gone through what they have.

We thought the fish would only feed 70 people. Well God must had been looking down and made that fish feed at least 200 people. I wish we could give more to the people in MS and LA. I know I will have some of the students in my class tomorrow since I am working at one of the schools very close to the Red Cross shelter in Robertsdale.

My husband knows the Waveland area pretty well but one of his college buddies parent's had a house in Waveland (which is gone) and they went down there many weekends from Auburn. This is also the same friend who lives in New Orleans that we are trying to find.
