The Heroes Thread

#1 Postby Terry » Mon Sep 05, 2005 11:03 am

There are so many heroes in this natural and national disaster. Who are your heroes - big and small?

And no bashing of others' heroes allowed or I will smack you :D

A few of my heroes, in no order of importance:

The Coast Guard - They continue to just keep on keeping on saving people and pets.

General Honore - What a Can-Do, I'll-Do-It, Cut-Out-the-Cr*p kind of leader.

MSRobi - Mary has had her house totally destroyed and yet keeps on smiling and helping in her devastated community of Pascagoula, MS. She has an outlook we all need to emulate.

CajunMama - Like the city of Lafayette, she has rolled up her sleeves and gone to work to help the people of the surrounding areas. How many cookies have you baked for those children so far, Mama?

Tell us who your Katrina Heroes are!

I need to add BeachBum_Al's hubbie. When the hurricane was first coming, she had posted because she was worried and he was in another town helping families shore up their homes. He is now on his way to MS, to help survivors in Waveland. Also want to add all of the people here, who have left their dry homes and families to go down and deliver much needed supplies. Also JAX who has been delivering supplies and hopefully he has got some help doing this!

Gosh, I almost forgot the "diaper man" who was "appropriating" diapers, wipes, pedialite, formula and baby food for those people around the dome with babies.

A shameless plug for my own guys. The men and women of Florida Task Force 4. A search and rescue team comprised of firefighters from Seminole and Orange counties and the city of Orlando. These guys were in Mississippi the morning after Katrina hit and just came home last night. Also the deputies of Seminole County Florida who are still in Mississippi working to maintain law and order. I told you it was a shamless plug.

The National Guard

The Military

The Police Officer and public work employees from all over.

The Fairhope High School Cheerleaders who drove over to Robertsdale, AL to play with the children one day.

The churches in my areas that are collecting items for the people.

All of the people who have lost everything but still manage a smile and help other people out.

My governor~he is trying to make things liveable not only for my state but all States effected by Katrina.

Carnival Cruise Lines for giving up three of their boats to house people.

I am sure I will think of more in the days to come.

it will happen.

I am pretty sure those are the guys he said he stopped and gave some water and ice to in Pascagoula the other day. They were working their butts off. Please tell them we thank them personally! NO SHAME IN THAT! As a matter of fact I have one. My husband if from Gautier, MS and works in Pascagoula, MS. We live in Mobile now. He has tons of family and freinds there and wanted to help right away. Let me tell you what...you make yourself available to God and HE WILL USE YOU...no matter how insignificant it is or may seem. We can't afford the gas really, but we went to our distribution site in Mobile and said we were taking a load of supplies to Gautier, they loaded him up and he went. We said we will take care of others and God will take care of us. I want you to know that his Uncle (Also a hero in my book - whose own son's house is ruined in MS) who can't physically help asked us to meet him in town. He keeps giving us money for gas so we can go back and forth and it keeps coming now from other sources! He has been going back and forth now for 4 days with tons of ice and water, food, clothes, shoes, etc.!!!!

I feel the need to add Senate Majority Leader, US Senator from TN., MD
Bill Frist.

He was right in there at the field hospital getting down and dirty with the rest of them, trying to save lives.

There was a little girl in a friend of mine's neighborhood who collected over four hundred dollars running a lemonade stand. God Bless her and all the children who are helping.

I can't remember if they were a club or what but the 300 or 400 air boat operators from Florida that came in to help resuce.

My sister's ex was looking for people to save on a kayak and found a working pontoon boat, so he took it and saved 50 people over near Chalmette. I was completely amazed when I heard this!

Rick Crawford, a Craftsman Truck Series driver from Nascar had the weekend off and got a whole trailer full of supplies and personally drove them down to MS and LA. I doubt he did it for publicity either, he's always been a nice guy IMO.

My bad command of the English language --- I'm asking for S2K folks to list their heroes... can be from S2K or not.

The electrical workers! They are kicking butt.

small plug for me. went to pick up my second cousin once removed.....I think. He was at Tulane evacuated to san antonio, then dallas then went with friends to st. louis. his mom called me and asked if i could pick him up and get him to paducah ky to hitch a ride with a friend going to long beach so this morning i got in the car at 6:30 drove up to st louis then to paducah and then back to springfield. 14 hours to drive the kid 3 1/2 hours down the road. I decided all my relatives are getting a list of every relative address and phone we have our own emergency evacuation list now. He had riden through springfield on his way to st louis, could have saved some time. bad thing was i don't think we had actually ever met before. he had extended family in ft worth who would have driven him too. it broke my heart he has had such a rough week and will have so many more to come.
