Superdome to be demolished

#1 Postby Bob the Leprechaun » Mon Sep 05, 2005 9:29 pm

I just heard Ted Koppel on ABC say during halftime of the FSU-Miami game that the Superdome is going to be torn down. I'd say it's probably for the best.

Too many bad memories for too many people. It was a boondoggle when it was built, costing several times the original projected cost. I't only right that it meets its grave after the dreams of many are diminished or destroyed there.

Bring that sucker down!

I'd personally refurbish it and keep that as the only remaining structure in New Orleans... a memorial to the dead, complete with a list of names of the dead, much like the Vietnam Wall

Most of the buildings will have to be demolished in NO. They could keep it as a memorial or something. Or at least have something there if it is demolished. Kinda like what they will do with Ground Zero is NYC.

Well, if you keep the building, the cleanup and restoration will have to be done, which if you do that, well, you might as well keep playing football games there.

I would agree the best thing they could do with the land is a memorial park of some sort, like what they did in OKC.

I don't know how feasible that is, but it makes sense to me. There are many presumably able bodied people that don't want to leave NO or want to get back. IF it isn't too dangerous and the logistics of feeding and caring for them can be worked out, I think it would be a great idea to use local labor. Due to the toxins, etc. involved at this point we don't even know if NO will ever be brought back to its former "glory"or be brought back at all, but I hope it can be.

What about the convention center? Sounds like people there had it as bad as the 'Superdoom.' More people died at the CC. It's just that one had most of the publicity, the other didn't.

I've heard several people refer to the Superdome as "antiquated" (same for the Astrodome!)...remember, Busch Stadium (STL) was only up from 1969 to this year, after which it's being torn down for a newer venue for the Cardinals.

Considering the cost to refurbish, clean it, etc., NO may be better served to build a new dome. Perhaps, Houston, too?

Why does Houston need a new dome? They just built brand new stadiums for their teams.

The Astrodome since the Reliant Dome was built next door hasn't been used for much of anything. For awhile they were having a few high school football games there, but as far as I know none lately.

I guess they could use local labor, but I'm thinking it will probably be imploded. That's what they usually do with old stadiums.
