Katrina poem

#1 Postby 100feettstormsurge » Tue Sep 06, 2005 3:21 pm

I'm normally a lurker here, but my dad(Daniel T. Renar) in the past week has written a long, impressive poem about Katrina.
I thought I'd share it with all of you as my first post, but it's emotional so be warned.

Whirlwind Katrina

"Katrina, Katrina, did you really have to come ashore,
much chaos you left behind, how can I handle much more,
your punch in the gut, hurts deeply, left me sore,
my life, my peace, my love from me you tore."

"mile after mile, kindling match sticks you left behind,
graveyards of rubble for signature of your kind,
your not the first to visit with hurt on your mind,
but did you have to pick here for place of unwind."

"Katrina, Katrina, your winds, your waters engulf me,
flying maze trapeze, twisted images I see, I see,
your own bombs, arrows, spears that hurt, oh gee,
energy of water wrath, the howling, splintering of dear trees."

"this nightmare continues for day two, but you've left,
I hang by threads hope, sheltered by building cleft,
water rising, yes rising, fear for life, pounding heart deft,
flee for the attic, flee for the roof, confusion is the chef."

"your stay was short, that, thank God for that,
my bewildered mind sorts of this while on concrete sat,
you came damn close to removing my sanity's hat,
took away life, my wife, my son, my cat."

"are you still alive, am I still alive, please do check,
my help, your help, but where, so I check,
room flooded, waiter serves last rites, please tally the check,
streets of chaos, then streets of hurt, my neighbor, do check."

"day three of flooded still, crying of dark night sinister,
oh hope, where's hope, haven't heard from my sister,
rescue craft, oh please see me, yes, I'm alive mister,
shelter ahead, steer the straight course so I may lister."

"but inspite of you, Katrina, you failed to remove my hope,
this h*** on earth you left me, I'll still cope,
anger, frustration and sorrow, your children of scope,
I'm not dead yet, you brainless hideous d**e."

"ah, water so sweet, the taste of sweet quenching for thirst,
but many others ahead of me, young comes first,
nightmare city, am soon to leave, to start new life, I thirst,
but necessary yet, to collect my senses, that is first."

"yes, life goes on, I'll sing once more,
I'll come back with touchdown, even the score,
my spirit, the spirit of man will open tomorrow's door,
dixie land festival heritage, then heard even more."

"will I be back, only time will ever tell,
of nightmare visions spell, I awake, yell,
leave me free of this horror, pray tell,
a life to rebuild, victory over calamity, wish, I yell."

"yes, it will be tough, it'll be rough, this for sure,
but, folks will be back for bourbon street tour,
neighbors will be neighbors for love life demur,
life continues on its, this, rebuild cure."

Whew, done typing! 8-)
One other note: I came up with my username before Katrina ever formed.
I'm a storm freak but 99% of the time I wouldn't wish death or destruction on anyone.

100foot...

Please edit the poem and add your dad's name and a title. I am sure it will make the rounds of a lot of boards and be sent to many people. They should know who wrote.
