If anything good has come from Katrina..others will evacuate

#1 Postby ajurcat » Wed Sep 07, 2005 9:49 pm

I grew up in Texas City/LaMarque and at my grandparents in Galveston. The only storm we ever evacuated from was Carla. So many stories about that but another time. My parents - both 79 years old - have finally realized if any storm heads towards Galveston/Houston/Texas Gulf coast, they will evacuate. Katrina has been such an eye-opening to them. I do not want to make lite of the deaths in NO, AL and MS, but to those relatives of the ones that have passed, please know that their life/death has helped many, many others. (I know that sounds so trivial but it isn't. It's from the bottom of my heart. ) I would love to hear more about their lives. Everyone has stories to tell but that is what is so great about life! I would rather hear about 'favorite stories' than about the facts and reality. The stories are what life is about...not statistics. I know everyone has a story about a relative and the US coastline.

Sorry for carrying on but this is my healing. I have never started a thread but just hearing my parents say they will evacuate is such a relief. If another thread has been started about this, please forgive me.

ajurcat, I agree. While we don't know what nature will bring us in the future, we can be guaranteed that people are going to think a lot harder about evac orders in the future. The number of lives saved? If it equals the lives lost in this storm, it will be a consolation, but for many Americans life has changed forever.

If only they had listened, watched the weather, and taken action. Too many stories I've seen showed people who didn't even know there was a violent hurricane offshore only one day before landfall. Will this make a difference? One thing is for sure, as nature culls those who are not attuned to their own survival, fewer are guaranteed to die in future events. Darwinism, perhaps. Otherwise, I just don't know.
