Nimitz High School musical proceeds to aid hurricane relief
IRVING, Texas (The Dallas Morning News) - When the curtain closes on the final performance of Nimitz High School’s production Damn Yankees, the cast and crew hopes it will be a success for both attendees and Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
“We wanted to do something to help and knew we’d have a very large crowd of people coming to see the show,” said Bruce Hermans, district theater arts lead teacher. “Donating what will hopefully be a very large sum of money from concession sales made the students very excited.”
Nimitz High School theater director Bruce Hermans, choir director John Wayman and orchestra director Marla Maletic are combining talents to lead a large student cast and crew in the creation of the full-length Broadway musical Damn Yankees. This project includes about 10 other teachers from Nimitz who are donating their time and acting talents to make this multi-departmental effort a success.
Also, students from Lamar and Bowie middle schools are portraying a few of the younger characters in the show.
The show will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, Friday, Sept. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 1, in the Nimitz High School Theatre.
Tickets are available at the door. Cost is $6 for students and $8 for adults. Friday is Family Night; all kids, elementary- and middle-school students receive half-price submission when attending with a parent.
All concession profits will benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.
