To all families who evacuated from Katrina or Rita with children who enrolled in nonpublic schools elsewhere:
Please be advised that you are likely eligible for a tuition refund if you paid tuition elsewhere while you were evacuated. THIS INCLUDES ALL CHILDREN WHO ENROLLED IN PRIVATE SCHOOLS while evacuated. A federal program has been established called the Emergency Impact Aid for Displaced Students Program that reimburses schools for the cost of educating evacuees, even if the student paid tuition there. "The Emergency Impact Aid for Displaced Students program provides funds for local educational agencies (LEAs) to assist with the cost of educating students displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita during school year 2005-06 and for nonpublic schools servicing displaced students."
It provides that by late January, schools (including most private and parochial schools; the website has a list of all which qualify), the school must apply for the program. The deadlines are complicated but YOU MUST FILL OUT A PARENT APPLICATION which is available through the link below, and get it to the school ASAP. They then apply for refunds, and you get reimbursed.
This is hot off the press, has a very short fuse, and you should probably contact the school you visited to be sure they are aware of it and are working on it.
