A day before their team takes to the field for the Sugar Bowl, more than 300 Notre Dame students, alumni, staff and administrators spent part of Tuesday working on Katrina recovery efforts in the area.
Dozens of volunteers from Notre Dame painted and worked on a beautification project at the Mirabeau play spot in Gentilly.
Lt. Governor Mitch Landrieu and LSU Chancellor Sean O’Keefe thanked the volunteers from Notre Dame for their work.
Notre Dame’s president said it was great to help in some way with the area’s recovery.
“It’s inspiring to us to join the people of this area to see the resilience in rebuilding this great community. We’re honored to be here and honored to be part of this great effort,” said Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins, C.S.C.
Notre Dame has been involved in a series of previous efforts to respond to the area’s needs after Katrina, including raising more than $314,000 to assist with reconstruction.
