New Addition to the Weather Central

#1 Postby mf_dolphin » Sun May 04, 2003 3:48 pm

I've added some common conversion utilities that we always need during the hurricane season:

KTS-MPH
MB-In of Merc
Distance Calculator

:-)

Folks this is a great addition because you can see how many miles is a storm from your city or town.Another reason that storm2k is #1 around the net thanks Marshall for bringing this. :)

I love the Storm Distance Calculator. I remember that one degree latitude is 69.0 miles and one degree longitude is 52.0 miles. :)

Tom, when I run the distance calculator I get 69 miles for one degree of latitude and 63 miles for one degree of longitude. Are you sure about your figures? Maybe I need to check the math in the calculation... I got the formula from the internet so I hope it's right. :-)

Great point, Marshall. Honestly, ever time I calculate one degree of longitude I get 63 miles, not sure why I got 52 miles when I used the Storm Distance Calculator. I'll do it again later and I am sure I will get the former. Sorry about this.

Marshall, I just checked 10 to 15 minutes ago and one degree longitude came out to 51 miles, rather than the 63 miles it should be. The 69 miles per degree latitude remains, which is of course correct.

What coordinates are you using to get 51 miles? I just ran a test and got 69 miles for 1 degree of longitude and 64 miles for 1 degree of latitude. Please give me the actual coordinates you are useing :-)

I enjoy using the Storm Distance Calculator for finding the distance of the current storms from certainly locations and even from me, no matter if they affect my area or not.

Here are some I just checked:

41.0°N, 72.0°W to 41.0°N, 71.0°W = 52 miles
36.0°N, 71.0°W to 36.0°N, 72.0°W = 56 miles
31.0°N, 72.0°W to 31.0°N, 71.0°W = 59 miles

38.0°N, 92.0°W to 39.0°N, 92.0°W = 69 miles
