Various questions

#1 Postby Chacor » Mon Sep 24, 2007 5:56 am

Just some various questions about Atlantic systems, their location and strength...

What's the strongest storm on record south of 10N?
What's the lowest latitude at which there's been a major hurricane?
Similarly, what's the strongest tropical cyclone on record north of 40N?
And what's the highest latitude at which there's been a major hurricane?

Thanks.

You might be able to find some of your answers here if you use the climatology link in the map viewer. Go here and click on the "query storm tracks" link to load the viewer. It might not work exactly how you want, but it's worth a shot.

Not 100% sure, but I believe 1 and 2 are Ivan in 2004, and 3 and 4 are Alex in 2004.

I know this is mainly about hurricanes, but for the record Supertyphoon Kate in 1970 had 120kt winds at latitude 4.6N, 125kt winds at 5.3N and 130kt winds at 6.9N shortly before making landfall south of Davao in Mindanao.

Yes, Steve, because I'm aware that the WPac quite often has had low-latitude typhoons.

Thanks for the answers guys.
