If I can add my two cents...
I just memorize where the wind speed and direction setions are in each type of report. Then I just look at those. I also look for pressure in dropsonde and vortex data messages.
Speaking of vortex data messages, here's a site that explains a VDM from Hurricane Ivan in pretty plain english.
