I'm looking for reports from population centers, and anything over 39mph thats not here. I'm VERY intrested in gusts from Bay Saint Louis, Pass Christian, The Southeast Tip of Louisiana, and something higher from Biloxi, Buras, Waveland, Southwest Pass, and Grand Isle.

I would not be surprised if they were higher wind gusts than listed from Katrina. Most likely, the wind gauges were destroyed in the storm.

I think so too. I suspect Waveland had winds higher than 62mph.

I think so too. I suspect Waveland had winds higher than 62mph.
You must remember...some may of been destoryed, but most stations have no back-up power...so once they go out...there is no more recording data...

The instrument failed.

I suspect Waveland had wind gusts of 130mph, maybe even 140mph.

You must remember...some may of been destoryed, but most stations have no back-up power...so once they go out...there is no more recording data...


True. Just strange that station went out of service before winds reached hurricane force.

I agree...based on what I saw while watching Katrina online on that horrible monday morning. I visited Waveland in May. It was impossible differentiate between wind and surge damage because there wasnt a lot left to survey.

Has the 176 mph wind gust in Slidell at the NWS been proven to be a false one? Or am I remembering things I have read here previously incorrectly?

David I think so but im not sure. I was in Slidell as well and my amateur eyes didnt see anything suggesting winds that high. I think it was said before that its possible there could have been a strong downburst or even a tornado there.
