JTWC update at 12:00z has it now at 115kts so it's almost in line from what the images show.

Typhoon blows out of Philippines, at least 35 dead

Manila - Typhoon Chanchu blew out of the Philippines on Sunday, leaving behind a trail of destruction that killed at least 35 people, officials said.

Many communities in the battered areas - 14 eastern and central provinces as well as Manila - were still out of power and flooded, according to the National Disaster Coordinating Council.

The disaster relief agency said 25 of the fatalities drowned when a passenger ferry sank on Friday off the coast of Masbate province, 405 kilometres south of Manila.

Ten other people were killed in various accidents, such as electrocution or being crushed by toppled trees or walls, in other parts of the country, it added.

Eight people were still missing due to various boat sinkings.

Almost 50,000 people were displaced by Chanchu, which intensified into a typhoon as it moved away from the Philippines into the South China Sea early Sunday morning.

The weather bureau said the typhoon had maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometres an hour and gusts of up to 150 kilometres an hour.

At least 608 houses were totally destroyed, while 3,452 partially damaged, the disaster coordinating council said.

The agency said damages to crops, infrastructure and private properties were initially estimated at 18.7 million pesos (363,100 dollars).

The typhoon forced the cancellation of more than 60 domestic flights and inter-island ferries, stranding more than 140,000 people in the affected airports and seaports.

Air and sea travel were expected to resume later Sunday as Chanchu was already 280 kilometres west-south-west of Manila, according to the weather bureau.

I'm guessing right now Chanchu is the size of Florida right now! Not to mention a Big Typhoon expected to hit as a Cat-4!

The outer bands are already affecting Hong Kong. The waves there are probably already causing erosion on the beach. Hong Kong is about to witness hell and is seeing it right before their eyes!

Though I have to admit Chanchu is BEAUTIFUL. One of the best looking systems I've ever seen (that's about 400 good looking storms  ).

there is little chance of this hitting as a super typhoon. JTWC is overstating the landfall intensity big time

there is shear between it and the coast.

JT usually has a high bias with its intensity forecasts. Many times, they forecast a typhoon to hit Japan as a 4 or a 5, but it hits as a 1 or a TS

I agree. Typhoons are very susceptible to large-scale weakening from shear increase. I think it will hit as a 2.
