Once again, we see that the Everglades have sufficient heat and moisture to sustain the structure of an established cyclone.

Katrina looks as good now as it ever did before landfall. I'm real concerned she can get to major status in the Gulf.

NHC is saying erratic west.About 20 mins ago:

AT 9 AM EDT...1300Z...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE KATRINA WAS LOCATED
NEAR LATITUDE 25.2 NORTH... LONGITUDE 82.0 WEST OR ABOUT 45
MILES NORTH-NORTHWEST OF KEY WEST FLORIDA AND ABOUT 65 MILES
SOUTH-SOUTHWEST OF NAPLES FLORIDA.

KATRINA IS MOVING ERRATICALLY TOWARD THE WEST NEAR 6 MPH AND THIS
MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS... WITH A
SLIGHT INCREASE IN FORWARD SPEED.

What Key West is this? I see that it had been moving about just south of west until around 9, when it start a southward jog, about 210, but definately not due south.

The dip south is probably the eye getting stronger and contracting in to the SE portion of the big eye/dry slot. It should continue on west. It did this last night and some of us thought it was a stall. Watch for a tighter smaller eye as the thick SE quad tightens and wraps.


We are windy under the rainless disc. Just saw a small patch of blue sky to the north. Light gray storm disc to south. Think the west coast of Florida has beaten this one.

It appears as those an eye wall is building back in on radar. Eye also starting to get more defined. I hope she doesnt pull a dennis and do an amazing amount of rapid deepening. Unfortunately, those waters are steamy........
