From Avon @ 2:25PM: cannot call into Buxton, but they can call out... road flooded near Rodanthe. shingles blowing off, but slightly improved conditions. Power was on, but went out during phone call.

Trying to get in touch with Hatteras Village, where the worst has apparently occurred--same place where they got battered by Isabel--I just hope those people working on the boats are safe--the captain said that this was very much like 1993 Emily.

When Dr Lyons was on the BarometerBob show a few weeks ago he said that intensity forecasts were the biggest problem with today's systems. The understanding of the dynamics involved are just not sufficient to predict the intensity changes. He also said that this is one of the most pressing research efforts on going in the tropical cyclone field. This one really caught most of us by surprise....

3PM: Phones down in Hatteras Village and Buxton; however, they have power in Avon with hurricane force winds about 80 to 90mph. Person talked to daughter in Frisco...water 3 ft deep in her yard and within 6 inches of reaching the house.

Will try to get updates from Hatteras Village, but the phone lines are having trouble...am kind of worried about soundside flooding, but winds there should be subsiding about now. Have another update around 4PM...need to write a forecast for the depression.

I would hope that tourists on Hatteras Island had the good mind to stay in their rental cottages today. North of Oregon Inlet, that's not the case. From what I've heard, Highway 12 and Highway 158 are packed. From my office window in Duck, I see bumper to bumper rubberneckers just out driving because they have nothing else to do.

The Duck Research Pier (1 mile to my North) in the last hour is reporting North winds 33-knots sustained with 38-knot gusts. I can confirm that it's just starting to Rock-n-Roll here now. Winds and rain are really picking up.

I thought Alex would be one of those "barely made it" hurricanes like Erika in 2003.

When I read it was upgraded last night to a hurricane, I thought 80 mph would be as far as it got and for a short period of time.

Apparently not.
