Curious in that TPC used "direct hit" and HRD uses (the more precise, IMO) "landfall" .

So it goes.

Back from Hurricane Alex

#1085 Postby vacanechaser » Wed Aug 04, 2004 12:47 pm

Wow..... What an experiance we had... Alex was just as tuff as the billing... For those who may not have known it, Mark recorded the highest wind gust at 102mph in Hatteras Village... This was the area hit so hard by Isabel less than a year ago... I recorded a 92 at the bottom of the road that Mark was on.. He drove up the hill into the open near the sound and got 102mph.. I was down near Highway 12 and hit the 92mph.. We are still working on the write ups, video and photos.. Plus I am sure he will post something later...

no doubt... it was really sad to see the people who were still rebuilding and repairing their homes and business from Isabel suffer what was about 4-6 foot sound side surge... The surge waters were all the way up the island... Of course there were dry areas and some of it was from the heavy 9.25 inches of rain in less than 7 hours... But as far as the storm it's self, it was a heck of a rush... I will have some stuff online soon.. you will see we were less than 9 miles from the eye... It did cross the coast at the "Point" north of where we were...

I was wondering if the most SE portion(Buxton) may have seen a let-up in the wind and some brightening in the cloud cover as the eye passed by. What was the lowest pressure you guys measured? Thanks!

Alex re-intensifies

Latest Dvorak indicates we have a 90KT storm. Still looks as if it will bypass Nova Scotia, but may pass somewhat too close for comfort

Whoa! It is looking better organized on satellite imagery... I hope it safely bypasses Nova Scotia. They don't need a storm this early in the year... especially after Juan.

What types of damage did you see? Were there widespread total structural failures like with Isabel? Also, how did the islands themselves hold up? Were there any new inlets created and how did the repairs made to the isldns after Isabel hold up?

Alex info

Derek:

I'll answer for/with Jesse on this one.

There was little structural damage- just first floor flooding from the sound side surge. It was a good five feet easily.

The islands suffered some overwash both from the sound and the ocean. Dunes as far north as the Oregon Inlet area were overwashed from the ocean- that surprised me.

All in all it was minimal damage except for the flooding- which could add up to millions in property damage. Some folks had their whole first floor under 1 1/2 feet of sound water. Yuck.

No new inlets that we saw- of course we drove all the way up Hwy 12 and it was fine- covered in sand in some areas but held up ok.

Alex strengthens to 105 mph

#1096 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Wed Aug 04, 2004 3:43 pm

Max winds are 105 mph with gusts to 125 mph with Alex making it a category 2 hurricane once again.

At 5 PM Alex is centered at 37.9N 67.5W. Movement ene at 18 mph. Pressure 970 mb or 28.64 inches.

A beautiful hurricane today with a well established eye and eyewall structure. Definitely not a good thing for shipping interests.

Thanks for the update. Hurricanetrack, I also live in Leland. If we experience a hurricane around here this year, I'd be more than happy to help out in any way I can.

It's not impossible. It's got just through this evening to strengthen possibly further before moving into cooler waters. A few days ago, we wouldn't think this would be a strong tropical storm let alone a hurricane or even potentially a major hurricane. Alex sure had some power for the Outer Banks and now is a major threat for shipping interests and deep sea fishermen.
