Ivan Advisories

This evening I had several IM conversations with acquaintences on Aruba and came away feeling the level of understanding/awareness regarding the power of hurricanes is very low....and as a result there has been no particular rush to prepare for IVAN. The prevailing thought - these storms don't come here...why prepare.
Given the very limited level of preparations completed less than 24 hours before possible landfall, the potential for disasterous consequences is IMO significant....possibly a disaster about to happen. I pray this is a false impression on my part, and more importantly that IVAN stays well north of the ABC islands.

i'm hoping, like yourself, that residents in aruba know that even a brush with this storm could cause significant property damage. while barbados looked to be spared from a direct hit by a few hundred miles, they were still heavily impacted. ivan is a big storm and at 135mph, i'd imagine it's the most powerful to move past these islands in some time. even if the predicted move N-NW continues, the ABC trio should still get some uncommon weather over the next 24-36 hours, especially those in curacao.

The projected path rubs past the ABC islands, north of them by about 60 to 100 miles, passing Aruba early to mid Thursday. Although this is closer than Barbados was when it got blown past, Barbados got hit by the dreaded right front quadrant, and the ABCs will be to the south.
However, IF this storm surprises again and heads due west, those islands may be in for a rude and dangerous historic event.

Mentally I don't know if we can continue to handle these sto
There comes a time when we ordinary people cannot endure these threats daily. Two hurricanes in 3 weeks, recovery and now 5 days later a potential major hurricae again. I have lived in Florida 51 of my 55 years. I cannot ever remember preparing for 1 storm every 4 years and experiencing one every 10-15 years. The math gets scary when we are talking about prepare and experience 3 storms in 4 weeks. The brain and body begins to yell enough. I see it written all over my employees. Some who have moved here from Northern locales tell he they are considering moving. They are no joking. In fact, smiles are hard to find now. BUT if Ivan is coming our way, then it is prepare agian. Somehow it will quit, and I hope I will endure.

Ok, this is really wearing me down. I still have to go shopping after Frances. HAve lost my food twice. Lost a Tree. The kids have missed 4 Hurricane days from school already. In fact, I think they've been out more than actually in class this year. And have spent untold amount of money fleeing from a Hurricane and getting prepared for another. I guess the only good thing to come from all this is that I can't find one person in Florida who takes them lightly anymore.

I've been exposed to Camille, Betsy, Donna, Charley, Frances and others in my 62 years, and I can't remember anything like it either.elvinp wrote:There comes a time when we ordinary people cannot endure these threats daily. What really worries me is that we'll either see total panic or total apathy. Either way, people will be hurt whether this hurricane hits Florida or not. Already, my neighborhood looks like a war zone...will it become one? I'm a 'lurker', a transplant from FLHurricane, currently down and other forums, have been for years, but I've never even heard of 4 tropical storms or worse (much less major storms) hitting one state, hell, even one country in a year.

I've lived here for 41 years. Either Clearwater or Indian Shores, Indian Rocks. It doesn't matter how often I've been through these storms.......you forget. You forget what it feels like to be in winds above even 35 mph. You forget the sound, and the bending of the trees, and the driving rain. You forget the agony of the duration.
Perhaps there's a reason why we are allowed to forget. I compare it to childbirth, b/c if you really remember what it's like, no intelligent person would ever chose to do it again.
At this point, there's not been enough time to forget anything. And I think, b/c this last storm took absolutely forever to stop blowing on Sunday and Monday, and hell....Saturday too, it made it far worse.....at least for me it did. And then, there's the pleasant thought of tripling the winds that we experienced that just makes you want to run for your lives.
But the one thing you do remember is that people die in these things. That roofs blow off homes, and leave them looking like toothpicks that have been poured out of a box. That trees land on houses and people and cars. That people get electrocuted in the aftermath. That floods and tornados follow the storm inland for many miles. People have died, people are still dying, and what's instore for us next week.
I know this is doom and gloom, but welcome to my world right now.
And, is there a gallon of bottled water to be had in the State anymore????

NHC notes for today....
1-Their storm shutters are still up. I pass by to and from work everyday on the Turnpike. Hmmm...
2-President Bush is expected to pay them a visit this afternoon.

Anyone heard anything re: Harlan/Corbin area? Is it being this affected too? My husband's family lives there and on a normal day the roads are scary let alone this.
