The estimates by local officials if New Orleans were to get hit by a category 5 hurricane are between 45,000 and 50,000 dead.

So knowing this possibility, the residents wouldn't evacuate??!!

We will see if this going to happen because the low in the central u.s. is about to start to lift out to the NE if you look at it on the water vapor loop.

That remains to be seen...I will say this--New Orleans hasn't had a direct hit since 1965, so, I'm not overly concerned that this system is the next one...We'll see, but, we've got alot of time to watch. Cancun obviously has much less time.

Say that to Mitch and Gilbert...They where both forecasted to do so. But because they where so powerful they did not recurve.

Of course we would evacuate if given the warning.

Probably won't be able to. Reports say the island is flooded.

Do they have a U.S. embassy? You might could call them, but again, it may be days before you can through.

Noone is safe at this moment. I am still predicting a SW FL hit around Naples. Any comments welcome.

Telephone lines are down. As 11:15amEDT, they could call out with cell phones. I'm not sure about incoming calls, but then again they wouldn't keep there cell phones on for incoming calls because they need to conserve batteries.

Well, when else exactly would be a good time to discuss the effects of a strong cane hitting New Orleans? After one hits? When one is grazing it by a 100 miles? Or, you know, beforehand, while there is still the possiblity the hit might happen, and the information might actually be helpful?

Forewarned is forearmed. Or forebiceped. Or something like that.

I wasn't worried a few days ago, either.
What a difference a day makes.

you'll always have some holdouts....NOT everyone will evacuate...and you can't make them if they don't want to.

Look at http://stormcarib.com/reports/2004/cayman.shtml

Lots of people post there when they have reached somebody, telling about conditions in that area.

Good luck to you in reaching your family! I hope they are safe!
