Breaking News-Virus shutting down Windows 2000 around globe

On CNN now.

It's a low impact virus but CNN's computers are going crazy, NY Times, Asian computers, European computers, etc.

I've been watching this and I think CNN is making a big to do over nothing, just because its affecting them. I haven't seen anything on any other TV station or on the net, and Microsoft even calls this a "low impact" event.

Not to mention the vast majority of computer users out there don't even use Windows 2000, most everyone has upgraded to XP. Its mostly corporations which are being affected, not home PC users.

Exactly. I was like What in the World??? CNN was covering it like it was the end of the world for over a half hour.

ABC was also affected. From what I can tell, it is mainly Windows 2000 and early XP, like pre SP1 or 2.

From TVNewser:

The Worm That Swallowed CNN
CNN spent an hour in "breaking news" mode when a worm infected its computers in New York and Atlanta. (Leading to the real question: Why does CNN still have computers running Windows 2000?)

"We didn't really miss a beat," a CNN spokesperson said this evening. Because CNN's facilities are spread out, the network was able to continue broadcasting from D.C. until N.Y. came back online.

Anderson Cooper 360 started a few minutes late. Here's what Cooper told viewers: "Just about two hours ago, most of our computers here, and some systems across the country running Windows 2000 suddenly shut down." There were only a few minor glitches during the show.

Showbiz Tonight broadcasted on schedule from the Time Warner Center, too. "Fasten your seatbelt, it could be a wild ride," co-host A.J. Hammer said.

> Did CNN go overboard? After all, a Microsoft spokesperson said "we haven't seen any huge uptick or impact today...a fairly small number of customers being impacted."

> A tipster says: "This virus story was in the news all day today (and yesterday!) It's now 'breaking news' on CNN only because it's now effecting CNN. What an ego-driven news coverage decision...I wonder who made the call to 'flood the zone' on this story?"

I think someone has too much time on their hands. Referring to the people who are doing this.

That's why they make antivirus software and firewalls. Get on eof each and keep them up to date.

For a firewall, I recommend Zone Alarm. The base version is absolutely free, and it works really, really well as a basic firewall. For antivirus there are many good choices. Just pick one and make sure it updates every day.

Serious about still having Win98 - yes. I haven't needed to upgrade my computer at home yet and I don't want to mess up my screenwriting software or lose the files  . Serious about being thankful - LOL...no. Just joking. Only at times when some crap like that virus is going around.

I saw CNN's "Breaking" news late yesterday afternoon as well and watched a little bit of it. I changed it and the next time I turned on CNN was when I woke up a little after 4am and Daybreak was on. Guess what they were talking about?

It's humorous to me that CNN considers Microsoft Windows security issues to be "breaking news". The entire Windows code is nothing more than a pile of security vulnerabilities with a pretty front end.
