PINETOP-LAKESIDE - The woman who reportedly robbed a thrift store of $4,500 in jewelry was arrested shortly after returning to the store in search of her forgotten purse.
On the morning of Sept. 2, four individuals entered the First Mesa Trading Thrift Store reportedly to sell jewelry to the owner. Peggy K. Shorty, 33, of Sanders and a 15-year-old female allegedly tried to distract the owner while Dalton R. Pinto and a 12-year-old male loaded their pockets with jewelry. Then all four ran out of the building.
However, Shorty and the female juvenile returned to try to retrieve the forgotten purse. The owner refused to give it to them. Shorty and the girl ran out again, heading eastbound on Highway 260.
An officer near the scene saw the female running and arrested them. Pinetop and the male juvenile were located at the motel where they were staying. The jewelry was recovered in their room after a search.
All four were charged with theft and conspiracy to commit theft. Shorty and Pinto were transported to the Navajo County Jail in Holbrook and held on $5,000 bonds. The two juveniles were released
