Woman Charged With Fatally Scalding Son
Grandmother Accused Of Not Getting Help

POSTED: 7:33 pm EST January 2, 2006
UPDATED: 7:38 pm EST January 2, 2006

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. -- A 3-year-old boy died after his mother held him in a tub of scalding water as punishment on Christmas Day and his grandmother, who had custody, failed to get him medical care for a week, authorities said Monday.

The mother had lost custody of the boy for previous abuse.

Broward County sheriff's deputies found Jaquez Mason with burns over 50 percent of his body after getting a 911 call Sunday morning. He was pronounced dead a half hour later. It was unclear why he was punished, spokesman Jim Leljedal said.

His mother, Valerie Kennedy, 30, was charged with child abuse murder and jailed without bond. His grandmother, Annie Williams, 51, accused of failing to take the boy for medical treatment, was charged with manslaughter and was being held on $10,000 bond.

Deputies said a court had placed Jaquez in the custody of his grandmother because of past abuse by the mother. Despite that, Williams allowed the boy to spend Christmas with Kennedy, officials said.

That evening, Kennedy told Williams that Jaquez got burned, and Williams took her grandson back to her Deerfield Beach home and applied ointment to his burns, officials said.

Both women gave statements to homicide detectives, admitting their involvement, officials said.

A man who answered the phone at the grandmother's house refused to talk about the child or what happened. Court records did not list an attorney for either woman.

I hope she gets the max, but then again I'd want her to get the max regardless who the victim is. Being burned is an awful way to be injured, I don't even want to think about how bad being burned fatally must hurt.

Let the other inmates scald her with boiling hot water, see how she feels after that.

I read this tragic story yesterday and my heart broke. The mother was also accused of past abuse, didn't even have custody or something. Her mother did. Some mother/grandmother to allow such extreme abuse to occur. I'm glad the Grandmother was charged with manslaughter. She should be!

:-(

"Held a 3-year-old boy in a tub of scalding water as punishment..."

It sounds like a toilet training issue. That's one of the most common instances of abuse.

Stupid parents try to "make" the kids learn according to when they think it ought to happen.

Ed - yup and when you realize this strategy only makes matters worse, the child does so much better. A casual, laid back approach is what worked best with my kids. They had accidents but once you said - "oh you'll do much better next time", they relaxed. My mother was a nervous wreck but never disiplined me this way (thankfully). I was determined not to repeat her ways.

Getting upset with a child over potty training is one thing, but burning them under a river of scalding water is another!!!! This woman would have found a way to abuse no matter what, it sounds like to me. Anyone who does something like this is deranged and has huge issues. I have a 3 year old and I can't imagine what this poor boy went through, and the agony he was in. It was probably over something petty, and on Christmas Day!!! :grrr: :grrr: This is suppost to be a happy day for a 3 year old. I hate to hear this kinds of stories.

I think someone needs to be her in hot scalding water and hold her in it till she dies. I know I am cruel but that is terrible what she did to her son. How can someone do something like that? I feel guilty just getting onto my girls that it is beyound my comprehension how someone could do something like this.

ITA! I felt bad this morning because my daughter was crying when I brushed her hair (more because she hates to have it brushed than because it hurt LOL) - I can't imagine intentionally doing anything that would hurt a child; those that do . . . well, let the punishment fit the crime.
