It is perfectly okay IMO, since no one is forcing it on anyone (an ELECTIVE). Since the basis of our history has been based on Christianity and how it has influenced politics (yes POLITICS) in medieval times through to today, it is important for today's children to understand how and why people believed certain things and why it led to wars, etc. In terms of Literature, there are TONS of references to the Bible in literature everywhere, especially in schools. This course sounds like it will just clarify what these references are.

Catholicism, Judaism, etc., have had an influence on politics through the times, too.

I somewhat disagree...True no one is being forced but my atheist dollar is paying for it... :) I love learning about the history of religions it fascinates me...But I have learned this on my own....I still stand firm if you want to experience a religion do so in the their places of worship..... :wink:

and they're represented in the Bible as well. Judaism has the Old Testament and I'm pretty sure that Catholics are still considered to be Christians.

Hush. Catholics are more inline with reality and peoples civil rights. That is what makes us different than Christians.

Level headed but still pro-religious...This is nothing more than a bible study class that should be in the church not the public classroom...IMO

see, i'd like to learn about the Bible, but dont want to learn about it in church. I'd like to learn from an academic perspective, and not some particular denominations's take on it.

The only true way of learning the bible is from a religious school that teaches theology. Otherwise, you will be getting fragmented info.

your statement is merely your opinion. i have no intent of setting foot in any religious school to get a slanted look at theology.

wouldnt want to crack the foundation....

i want an objective and historical perspective, not a fundamentalist one.

Being a Athiest I have learned about as on a historic perspective...But I have done it on my own....I can't see how it can be taught without also pushing the belief...Don't get me wrong .. I have always said people should learn as much as they can about their particular religion because only parts of it is usally preached about...But not on my money...
