Anyone drive a Subaru?

iDrive is some sort of system devised by BMW to control stereo, Navigation etc. From what I understand it is all centered around a "wheel" type controller and uses a BMW system to control everything. Despite it getting slammed by many people who have reviewed it they insist on keeping it in some vehicles.

as long as hummers guzzle gas at such an alarming rate, forget it. and the new cadillacs are visually unappealing to me.
jeeps are okay but dont have good gas mileage either. just not something we'd consider. we know four people who own Cherokees and they're in the shop every month for something or other. no thanks.

I have to agree with this one, the Grand Cherokee seems to be the exception when it comes to American vehicles.

That surprises me, I have a 99 Grand Cherokee with 125K on the clock and onlynow are the OEM parts going bad. That said, the fuel pumps suck!!

I've a 1995 Subaru Impreza wagon with lots and lots and lots of mileage on it (way over 150K)-and virtually no problems. Get about 30 mpg... It has been properly maintained... but nothing else...
My son in law has one also--his is about 5 years old and is a "Forrester" wagon. Again, high mileage. They live in NH--near ski resort--and lots of driving is on ice, snow, unpaved roads, badly maintained roads, steep hills, etc. Again, good mileage, regular maintenance... His neighbors and friends also have Subarus with similar experience.
There is a reason there aren't many used ones out there for sale and it is almost impossible to find used parts, etc.--there are 20+ year old Subarus out there all over the roads doing just fine. Once you have a Subaru, you want another one...
I've had mine "off road" twice--neither time deliberately--but I was amazed at its handling like the advertisments! The first time, I was caught on a 2-lane road behinbd a major accident--and was sitting there reading a book, engine off, with 100 other cars and a cop knocked on my window and said, "what are you doing in this line--you're driving a Subaru! Follow those trucks! The trucks in question were being routed thorugh a freshly-plowed (muddy) spring field. I basically told him that he was nuts, but he was extraordinarily insistent and basically said that if I did not move my car that way he would ticket me, etc. so with much trepidation (and having written down his badge number) off I went through the plowed field, expecting to sink into the mire. Well, I did better than the trucks, the big SUVs with monster tires, etc. The little car just went right across that field and onto the parallel road... No problem!
The second "off-road" experience was when I was in the mountains in NH, it was night, and a severe thunderstorm had put trees down all over the roads, etc. and once again, local police asked me to go off-road--this time through the trees, etc. and they sent someone with me because they had an emergency and "my car would go through." Again, it did! No problems. I've never driven through the woods like that before but I did have a guide with me--but it was unreal how well the car did...
It's a champ in snow--even snow you'd think would be much too much snow for it. And while no car is good on ice, it's better than most! It does not have that high center of gravity of most SUVs... Slowly, steadily, and carefully... but it does not misbehave--it just goes...
I don't know if having a standard shift matters (it may for control), but mine does.
I also admit that while I keep "all weather" tires on it for the summer, I do have 4 SNOW tires for winter--but then I'm driving a lot in places where I expect fairly deep snow in the winter... So while Subaru does not think they are necessary, I do think they probably give me that extra "edge"--and three times I've been in 24+ inches of snow situations and my little car has gone right through it....
I also recommend the back windshield wiper (but it may be standard--don't remember) and fog lights if you drive where there is a lot of fog (those are, I believe, still an option).
Good luck--and I'd say buy the Subaru!
