The Mother Lode will dry out this week under sunny skies, following weeks of heavy rain and snow that continued through the weekend.

Four or five days of sunshine are forecast for Northern and Central California this week.

Temperatures in the foothills could reach the mid-70s later this week, according to the National Weather Service and the privately funded AccuWeather.

AccuWeather forecasts more wet weather by the weekend and next week.

This week's break should be long enough and mild enough to provide some flood relief to the region without triggering a massive snowmelt, said NWS meteorologist Johnnie Powell said.

Not everybody is out of the woods yet.

"With the northern San Joaquin Valley, we've just got to watch out for levee breaks as the water is still running high," Powell said.

Calaveras and Tuolumne county officials are on the lookout for any warm rain storms headed to the region, as the storms could set off heavier-than-average spring snowmelt.

The snowpack, for this time of year, is the highest it has been in a decade, National Weather Service forecasters have said.

Too-rapid a warming period could fill reservoirs and spur flooding in rivers and creeks downstream.

Central Sierra residents woke up this morning to as much as 2 feet of snow at higher elevations and a few inches of snow as low as 4,000 feet.

Bear Valley Mountain Resort reported 2 feet of snow from the storm. Dodge Ridge Winter Sports Area reported 10-plus inches.

Chains or snow tires were required seven miles east of Long Barn on Highway 108 and east of Arnold on Highway 4.

Highway 120 at new Priest Grade Road still is closed after heavy rain storms damaged the road earlier this month.

For more information on highway conditions, call Caltrans at (800) 427-7623.

Sonora received 1.39 inches of rain yesterday and early this morning, according to a rain gauge at the Tuolumne Utilities District wastewater plant. Angels Camp received .85 inch, according to city public works employees.

The California Highway Patrol reported no major accidents in Tuolumne or Calaveras counties from yesterday's rain.

"Everybody's stormed up. They're so used to storms, they're driving cautiously," CHP Officer Mike Maddox said.

The counties also were spared major flooding yesterday, despite heavy rains.

Capt. Allen Columbro, of the California Department of Forestry, said he measured a half inch of rain by yesterday afternoon at the San Andreas station.

Columbro said he was happy to report no calls for flooding as of yesterday afternoon.

"So far, so good," he said.

Local ski resorts welcomed the spring snow on the second-to-last weekend of this year's ski season.

"The powder conditions are great and everything is open here," Dan Kelsay, sales director at Dodge Ridge, said yesterday.

Skiers and snowboarders over the weekend at Bear Valley enjoyed similar powder conditions.

"It's coming down like crazy," Rosie Sundell, marketing director, said yesterday.

Both resorts were looking forward to ideal skiing conditions under clear skies this week. And both plan big end-of-season soirees for this weekend.

John Lupo, owner of Heidi's Ski Shop on Highway 108 in Long Barn, was delighted to see snow on Easter Sunday.

"It's beautiful," he said of the inch of snow that fell by noon. "I love the change in the weather. I think that's what makes it special."

Vince Grimes, a bartender at Snowshoe Brewing Co. in Arnold, said it was raining hard yesterday afternoon.

"But everybody coming down the hill has snow," he said.
