How true of a friend are you??
If you overhead someone talking about one of your friends, what would you do?
I would back off until I knew the entire story. Even if my friend was wrong, I would still stick by him or her. What would you do?

Always better to be sure you have the whole story. And who are we to judge? Stick by your real friends no matter what.

I would consider the source, try to get the whole story, without any prying (if I couldn't I'd shrug it off unless it was really unkind--in which case I'd probably defend my friend)... and in the final analysis... definitely stick with my friend, because to be that, you have to stick through thick and thin.
This of course excludes their being part of any real attrocity in which case I'd have to reevaluate my thinking.

I'd do the same thing, because 1, I know the trash talking would be gossip; and 2, I would never open my mouth unless I get the facts.

That's very true, Linda. As usual, my "scientific" penchant is to over dissect. If someone simply made an off the cuff insult about a friend of mine, I'd jump to their defense in a heartbeat. I think I was considering the possibility of an accusation that might be fairly serious in which case, as I'd already said, I'd "consider the source"... but still stand by my friend unless the accusation was serious and proved to have merit--in which case I would have to reevaluate NOT my friendship for the individual in question, but my willingness to defend that which may well be indefensible.
Okay.. so I'm just to damned picky!

One of my best friends is a lady in her mid 50's; while she can be a real pain in the moon at times (and yes i have told her this) shes one of the better people I know. Of course people talk about her. When they get too personal or too hateful I step in. She does the same for me.
Myself I really dont care what ppl say about me as long as its true.

Very profound, and quite true... same here. The truth I don't mind; but false statements/accusations will set me off, usually too quickly. Irish temper I guess.

If people were saying something malicious and untrue, I might intervene, but it really depends on the situation. In some cases it might make things worse. Some people are so malicious that my intervention would mean nothing and possible give them more incentive. Most likely I'd listen and either dismiss it or go back to my friend. Again, it depends on who, what, where, and when.

Yes, that's my view on it too. I am a loyal friend and need to disassociate myself from those that feel the need to VENT their feelings regarding my friend when I am present. As I don't know what the problem involves and who did what to whom, I'll just step back (beside my friend) and take a deep breath. Maybe it will all blow over.
