(Richmond-AP) -- 20 Virginia localities, including most of Hampton Roads, have signed on to use Jamestown's upcoming 400th anniversary as a springboard for celebrating their own history.
Governor Mark Warner announced the 20 "pilot communities" on Wednesday. Planners hope that more localities will volunteer to stage commemorative events during the Jamestown anniversary year of 2007.
State officials hope Virginia's commemoration of Jamestown's founding will bring the state recognition, a flood of tourists and lasting benefits to the state's economy.
In Hampton Roads, Chesapeake, the Eastern Shore, Hampton, Isle of Wight County, Newport News, Smithfield, Surry County, Virginia Beach and York County agreed to be part of the celebration.

mamadude,
Has Colonial Williamsburg ever restored and/or opened the "Martin's Hundred" settlement site? This was downriver from Jamestown, and lasted until the Indian uprising that Jamestown survived (1610?). They have excavated the site, and at last report were planning to reconstruct it...any word?
