Budget or Day-To-Day

#1 Postby azskyman » Sun Jun 15, 2003 8:07 am

Was looking for an answer to a question about when our electric bill last changed when I got to wondering how many of you might operate under some sort of budget plan...and how many of you simply run from check to check.

My two sons picked up the budget habit from me. I've used a spreadsheet to help manage the finances, and now they do too.

For perhaps 20 years of our marriage, the checkbook and budget were controlled by my wife...and she handed me the allowance every week.

That last twelve have been under my watch, and she and I both get allowances each and every Friday.

Two questions then...who stands watch over the finances and is there some sort of budget procedure or is it pretty much day-to-day money management under your roof?

Since my wife is a banke by trade she does all the finances! :-) When we started living together we came to a financial agreement...

"What's mine is hers..., What's hers is hers...what's ours is hers" :-) You know what? We've never had an arguement about money! :-)

Well, I kinda live for the day and have a little nest egg for tomorrow. I've experienced the loss of many loved ones who saved for tomorrow and died before tomorrow came. This has been my rationalization for my carefree spending. But, to tell you the truth, I think I've always been a "spendthrift". When I was a kid, if I had $5.00 in my pocket, I would buy a gift for everyone in my family and one for ME too!!!! I'm still that way. I just love the look on someones face when they get a surprise gift. Now don't think "Oh how sweet!" It's actually selfish of me. I enjoy it as much if not more than they do!!!lol

As much as I love Excel, maybe that spreadsheet isn't such a bad idea - Nahhhhhhhhhh

I manage my own finances and stay on a budget. My children's child support goes right into their savings accounts, plus they get allowance. Received a lump sum from a car accident years back and that also is put up for them to go to college. I managed to get out of debt ON MY OWN and will never ever do that again. lol.

My wife "runs the show" financially...yet it does devolve into check-by-check, day to day.

Here in our house, I am the financial Guru.I have a very tight budget, since we mainly live on my husbands income I have to make his dollars stretch as far as possible.I do work casual outside the home a few hours a week, but my job is my home, taking care of the kids and hubby. My income goes for the extras for the kids. With only one main income, we live life on a tightrope, one twang of that rope, like my son's recent hospitalization and it really gets tough. But I am a firm believer that God provides, time and time again when the going got tough I have seen Him pull us through. We have food on the table, roof over our heads and our bills are paid, that's enough to be thankful for.Now that our children are getting older we are considering me going out into the world, boost our income up a tad...LOL....a new tax bracket!!we'll see for now that is in God's hands and on His timetable. :D

Blessings, Raine
