Sounds like 1 survivor(Pilot or Co-Pilot), 49 dead. Deadliest U.S. airline crash since 11/12/01.

Must have been a horrible fire. I would have expected more survivors in a situation like this.

I am assuming that 9/11 does not count as far as the deadliest?

No, 11/12/01 was AFTER 9/11(by 2 months). AA 587 crashed just after takeoff from JFK Airport killing over 260 people, including some on the ground.

It sounds like most of the people onboard died from the fire, not the impact. They are asking for dental records to get positive ID's. :(

That awful. Many probably would have survived if it were not for the fire. :(

Looks like it was a simple mistake. One turn too early, 22 instead of 26... easy to make, particularly after waking up at 4:00 AM.

I'm praying that the F/O survives and that the families of those that didn't will be comforted in these trying hours.

Interestingly, back in 1993 another commuter plane taxied onto Runway26 instead of Runway 22. The pilot recognised his bearing was off and they were able to reposition. As a result of this the pilot asked that special notice be put in place to warn future pilots about the confusing layout. This has been done at other airports after similar incidents but wasn't done here. Additionally, the main runway was apparently closed overnight for repaving work, and it's quite possible that rw26 was the only lit runway which may have helped the confusion. Still, 2 flights departed on the correct runway in the within 10 minutes of this flights launch and they had no problems finding the correct runway.

Here's a partial list of the victims so far. I don't think they've updated it yet to include the Lafayette person. I've only seen two updates and I'm sure more will follow. http://www.wlextv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5331989

Did anyone else think that opening sequence to the Emmys was in bad taste? I was shocked when they got to the plane crash part, and then I realized they were tying it in with Lost. Still, it was disconcerting to see the plane going out of control.

Duckie, thanks for the link for the list of victims. I'll keep checking.

I missed the opening. Saw the rest of the show though :D

And the 2 Canadians that were onboard were from Ottawa, Ontario. Even thought their last names were the same, they were not directly related other than being *boyfriend* and *girlfriend*.

Here's the story:-
The two Canadians killed Sunday in a Kentucky plane crash have been identified.
Harnessracing.com has identified them as Ottawa-based horseman Lyle Anderson, 55, and his girlfriend, Christina Anderson (no relation).

The couple was returning home after watching a couple of Lyle Anderson’s horses race at The Red Mile track on the weekend when Comair Flight 5191 crashed during takeoff from Blue Grass Airport, killing 49 people.

Anderson was the owner of Ottawa’s River Ridge Farm.

Foreign Affairs in Ottawa had said two Canadians were on board the plane, but did not release their identities.

From what I've read, the co-pilot survived because a police officer pulled him to safety. The police officer burned his arms in the process.

I am surprised that pojo does not know this. But a board of director for Habitat for Humanity was on board. He was on his way down here to the MS Gulf Coast to help in the rebuilding efforts. His name is Pat Smith.

Pat Smith, a member of Habitat for Humanity International's board of directors, was on his way to Gulfport, Miss., to work on rebuilding houses, according to Habitat spokesman Duane Bates.

FAA: Tower staffing during plane crash violated rules
POSTED: 10:38 p.m. EDT, August 29, 2006

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday acknowledged that only one controller was in the tower, in violation of FAA policy, when a Comair jet crashed Sunday while trying to take off from the wrong runway in Lexington, Kentucky.

Found a wonderful article about the young newlywed couple who tragically lost their lives in this crash. I don't believe it's been posted and if so, my apologies.

There was a person Eau Claire killed in the crash... he had graduated from UWEC in 2005.

I wasn't aware of the HfH director killed... I haven't worked with HfH in quite some time. Good memory Linda.

It is reported on Yahoo.com NEWS that the Controller only had 2 hours of sleep that night.... Isn't there a thing called Controller Crew Rest? .... Civilian/Military air personnel must get 8-12 hours of sleep prior to flight. That should have been enforced for the controller also.
