NE - Omaha man holds wife captive in home for two years

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - A man has been charged with locking his wife inside their house and holding her captive for two years by threatening to kill her if she stepped outside.

David E. Mitchell Sr., 35, was charged in a warrant Friday with false imprisonment and making terroristic threats. Mitchell, whose last known employment was with an import company, was arrested Friday in Omaha.

The man's 28-year-old wife and her four children - ages 2, 3, 7 and 8 - were taken out of the home by police through a partially opened window June 2, police spokeswoman Sgt. Cathy Cook said.

Cook said apparently the woman's mother discovered her living conditions and urged her to contact authorities. A victim's advocate contacted police after being informed of the situation most likely by the woman's mother, Cook said.

The man allegedly kept the woman inside the house by using locks on the doors that were only accessible from the outside, Cook said. Boards also were nailed across the basement door of the north Omaha home.

Police did not know if there were other means inside the house to restrict the woman's movement. The main floor windows, which were covered by foil, could be partially opened.

The house did not have a phone.

The woman claimed her husband had physically and emotionally abused her, Cook said.

"She was too afraid to leave because the husband had threatened her," she said.

It did not appear the children were under the same restrictions since the older children were allowed to go to school, Cook said.

Police said the woman and her children are in protective custody.

I have a friend in Omaha, but I've never heard him say anything about people wanting to get out THAT bad!

Seems if things weren't working out better than that you would simply leave the door open...instead of securing the house.

Maybe he was afraid she would leave and not take the kids with her.

Abuse, Steve, has nothing to do with sex, or brutality (although this is symptomatic); it has everything to do with CONTROL.

This man is, actually, very weak emotionally...he HAS to exert "control" over others in a manner that "empowers" him. Wives are particularly vulnerable, as are children...sometimes the two are pitted against each other, fomented by the father/spouse, so that in his own warped senses, HE emerges as the family "savior" at will by stopping one or the other...all the while, HE is in "control", and he savors it.

It would require a full battery of aberrant psychology courses just to scratch the surface in such cases...since I have "first-hand experience", it's easier for me to see than most.

There are some sick people in this world. I have first hand knowledge of a woman, who in her 50's decided it was time to get out and join the workforce, to feel like she was more than just a slave to her abusive, drunken husband. Unfortunately, her position working 3rd shift as a Nurses aide, set her up for some criminal activity by the a-hole of a husband. He would insist that she was cheating on him at her job, and subject her to an "internal" exam each morning for proof. He never found the "proof" but beat her anyway. He was my Ex Father-In-Law, and I wanted to kill him. None of my ex's family would do anything about it, because her mother begged them not to. However..she didn't hesitate to tell us what he was doing to her, and then turn and insist they do nothing.

If it was my Father, love him or not...he would be in jail today.
