Wow. Didn't know taking anything from a trash can was against the law. I understand trespassing is against the law to some point, but wow on the second-degree burglary charges. We take things off peoples trash piles often. People throw away great stuff all the time. What a waste of time and money(and food
), really.

Since they are being charged with trespassing, the owner of the produce stand could elect to not press charges. I hope the media points this out. I'm sure business will fall off. Maybe the owner didn't like someone going through the garbage, but to get the police involved is insane and cruel. The prosecutor in this case is probably given little choice.
Garbage cans behind food and produce stores are often considered community chests. I often see people behind my grocery store taking the boxes. In fact, one store here actually sets banana boxes away from the rest of the garbage so that people can have them.
If you can take heavy duty boxes, which are actually of some value, do you really think they'd care if you took a cucumber that they weren't going to sell.

I've lost count of the number of times I've been in a dumpster. My mother loves to go dumpster diving. I've never had any problems with the managers of the stores. The only reason they get mad is if people are dumping on their property or the people getting things from the dumpster make a mess. I've always cleaned up the area before leaving. Also, they have video cameras now so they can catch people who are illegally dumping. I can't believe they arrested these men. The last dumpster diving I did was at Krispy Kreme. I was going through the drive through when I saw a man taking a huge cart load to the dumpster. My aunt and I did a turn around and asked if we could have them and he said help yourselves. YUMMY!

LOL When I worked the late shift and got off at 1 or 2 am I used to hit the local donut shop and do the same thing.
As far as 6 months in jail..well ive seen murderers, drug dealers, and other thugs get FAR less time than that. Something is very wrong here.
